साल 1985 में जनरल ज़िया उल हक़ के फ़रमान के तहत औरतों के साड़ी पहनने पर पाबंदी लगा दी गई थी। पाकिस्तान की मशहूर गुलुकारा इक़बाल बानो ने एहतिजाज दर्ज कराते हुए लाहौर के एक स्टेडियम में काले रंग की साड़ी पहन कर 50000 सामईन के सामने फ़ैज़ अहमद फ़ैज़ की ये नज़्म गाई। नज़्म के बीच बीच में सामईन की तरफ़ से ज़िंदाबाद के नारे गूंजते रहे।

हम देखेंगे
लाज़िम है कि हम भी देखेंगे
वो दिन कि जिसका वादा है
जो लोह-ए-अज़ल^[1] में लिखा है
जब ज़ुल्म-ओ-सितम के कोह-ए-गरां ^[2]
रुई की तरह उड़ जाएँगे
हम महकूमों^[3] के पाँव तले
ये धरती धड़-धड़ धड़केगी
और अहल-ए-हकम^[4] के सर ऊपर
जब बिजली कड़-कड़ कड़केगी
जब अर्ज-ए-ख़ुदा के काबे से
सब बुत^[5] उठवाए जाएँगे
हम अहल-ए-सफ़ा^[6], मरदूद-ए-हरम^[7]
मसनद पे बिठाए जाएँगे
सब ताज उछाले जाएँगे
सब तख़्त गिराए जाएँगे

बस नाम रहेगा अल्लाह^[8] का
जो ग़ायब भी है हाज़िर भी
जो मंज़र^[9] भी है नाज़िर^[10] भी
उट्ठेगा अन-अल-हक़^[11] का नारा
जो मैं भी हूँ और तुम भी हो
और राज़ करेगी खुल्क-ए-ख़ुदा^[12]
जो मैं भी हूँ और तुम भी हो

“Hum Dekhenge” by Iqbal Bano

Iqbal Bano, the subcontinent’s beloved ghazal singer, born in India and trained in the Dilli Gharana by the legendary Ustad Chand Khan. In the hearts of all who knew and loved her music is the memory of that day: when, in protest against the jailing of the subcontinent’s foremost left poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz by Pakistan’s dictator General Zia-ul Haq, she sang Faiz’s immortal song “Hum Dekhenge” (We shall witness) at a Lahore stadium full of 50,000 people, wearing a black sari in defiance of Zia’s ban on the sari. As her liquid voice reached the crescendo – declaring “Certainly we, too, shall witness that day … When these high mountains / Of tyranny and oppression turn to fluff and evaporate / And we oppressed / Beneath our feet will this earth shiver, shake and beat / And heads of rulers will be struck / With crackling lightening and thunder roars / When crowns will be flung in the air — and thrones will be overturned …,” people joined with slogans of “Inquilab Zindabad” (Long live revolution!)

ग़ौरतलब है कि ज़िया के दौर में पाकिस्तानी महिलाओं के लिए साड़ी पहनना प्रतिबंधित था क्योंकि इसे ग़ैर-इस्लामी क़रार दिया गया था। इक़बाल बानो ने तानाशाही का विरोध करते हुए काले रंग की सारी पहन कर ये नज़्म गाई थी। उसी प्रोग्राम की रिकॉर्डिंग चोरी छुपे पाकिस्तान से स्मगल की गई और फिर पूरी दुनिया तक ये नज़्म पहुंची।
