Naxos, Greece – September 11, 2017 – It took more than 1,500 kg of raw Naxos potatoes, 22 huge cauldrons, the hard work of 40 volunteers to break the Guinness World Record for cooking the Largest serving of chips (fries); the electronic scale that weighed the fried potatoes read 554 kg, which is 100 kg more than the previous world record set in 2014 in Eagles, Idaho, in the United States.

It took more than 1,500 kilograms of potatoes, 22 huge caldrons, the hard work of 40 volunteers and the determination of a whole island.

The Guinness World Records world record for the largest serving of chips (fries) weighs 454.95 kg (1,003 lb) and was made by Twin Oaks Farms, Inc. (USA) in Eagle, Idaho, USA, on 20 September 2014. The weight of the raw potatoes used is 569.71 kg (1,256 lbs) and 500.07 l (110 US gal) of cooking oil was used to fry the chips.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest serving of baked potatoes; it is 1,716.6 kg (3,784 lb 7.28 oz) and was a serving of Huatiada achieved by the Comite Organizador de Fegasur 2012, in Juliaca, Peru, on 9 June 2012.

The electronic scale that weighed the fried potatoes read 554 kg, which is 100 kg more than the previous world record set in 2014 in Eagles, Idaho, in the United States.

The event was held during the 8th Naxos Potato Festival, one of the most popular gastronomic festivals of the Aegean Sea.

For Naxos, the biggest of the Cyclades group of islands in the Aegean Sea, potatoes are as precious as gold.

“Naxos is where the heart of the potato beats,” said chef Stelios Korres, who supervised the cooking leg of the operation.

To this day, more than 250 families depend on potato growing and livestock breeding on Naxos, an island where 60 percent of the population make their living in the farming sector.

They produce 8.5 million kg of potatoes per year, most of which are sold on the mainland. Locals hope that the record will bring their island global fame.
