Apan Vayu Mudra: Mrita Sanjeevani Mudra – Hand gesture For Cardiovascular Health

Apan Vayu Mudra is a powerful yogic hand gesture. It is the combination of two hand gestures, Apan Mudra and Vayu Mudra. To form this Mudra, after placing the tip of index finger at the root of the thumb, tips of middle and ring fingers are joined with the tip of the thumb. This Mudra is concerned with the healing of heart related diseases. Apan Vayu is one of the Panch Prana (Life Force) which is responsible to detoxify the body. It activates the pelvic region and helps to eliminate the feces and urine etc.

Apan Vayu Mudra: Technique

Sit in any comfortable meditation posture. Place both hands on the knees with palms facing upwards. Straighten your back, neck and head in one line. Close your eyes and relax your whole body. Take a few deep breath. Place the tip of the index finger at the base of the thumb. Fold middle and ring fingers slightly together and touch the tips of these fingers with the tip of the thumb. Little finger should remain straight. Make this gesture with both the hands. Bring your awareness on Anahat Chakra (Heart Chakra). Hold this position minimum for 15 minutes or longer duration, if comfortable. You can chant ‘OM‘ Mantra to enhance your concentration. It should be practiced for 45 minutes in a day. If a sadhak cannot sit for 45 minutes at a stretch, he may practice this Mudra for 3 times a day for 15 minutes in each session.

  • Practice of this Mudra is helpful to reduce the heart problem, high blood pressure and asthma.
  • When a person feels symptoms of heart attack, this Mudra may give the time to reach out for medical help because with the practise of this Mudra, parasympathetic nervous system is activated, which can help to normalize the heart rate and blood pressure. Moreover, it is helpful to increase the space element in the arteries.
  • Apan Vayu flows downwards and this Mudra helps to reduce the foul and extra air. So, it helps to cure gastric and digestive problem.
  • It also enables easy child birth.
  • Apan Vayu Mudra helps to control negative thoughts and mind becomes calm quickly.
  • If helps to manage anxiety, stress, insomnia and anger etc.
  • It balances three Doshas i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
  • It helps to cure headache, body pain and menstrual problems etc.
