Uganda Encyclopedia Facts For Students:
Uganda occupies the high pla teau of the East African Highlands. The plateau is surrounded by high massifs, often of volcanic origin. The central and southern extensive swamps. The country has many rivers and several large lakes.
Much of the country is wooded or grassland savanna. Grasslands predominate at higher altitudes.
About 7 per cent of the land is forest. The typical wild animals of Uganda include the elephant, water buffalo, antelope, gorilla, monkeys, various birds and many species of lacustrine fish.
Coffee, cotton, tea, sugar cane, sisal, maize, cassava and plantains are grown by Ugandan farmers who also raise cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. Lake fishing and pond fisheries are also an important feature.
By far the most important mineral is copper, followed by tungsten, tin and beryl. There is a major hydroelectric scheme at Owen Falls, Jinja. Apart from smelting, the country has some light industry including cotton ginneries, tobacco-curing plants, sugar factories and oil-mills (used for groundnut extraction). Other products are cement, asbestos and fertilizer.
Practically all Ugandan exports are handled by a railway line linking the country with Mombasa, Kenya. The total length of surfaced roads remains rather limited. River and lake shipping provides an important link.

'Oh Uganda, Land of Beauty: National anthem of Uganda'
I
Oh, Uganda! May God uphold thee,
We lay our future in thy hand;
United, free for liberty
together we’ll always stand.
II
Oh, Uganda! The land of freedom,
Our love and labour we give;
And with neighbours all at our country’s call
In peace and friendship we’ll live.
III
Oh, Uganda! The land that feeds us,
By sun and fertile soil grown;
For our own dear land, we shall always stand,
The Pearl of Africa’s Crown.
