हिंदू धर्म में पुष्कर सरोवर को एक अत्यंत विशिष्ट स्थान प्राप्त है, इसे पाँच पवित्र सरोवरों यानी ‘पंच सरोवर‘ में से एक माना जाता है। ये पाँच पवित्र सरोवर हैं- मानसरोवर (तिब्बत), गुजरात के बिंदु सरोवर (सिद्धपुर), नारायण सरोवर (कच्छ), पंपा सरोवर (कर्नाटक) और राजस्थान का पुष्कर सरोवर। इसी धार्मिक महत्व के कारण पुष्कर को ‘तीर्थराज’ भी कहा जाता है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि यहाँ कार्तिक पूर्णिमा के दिन इसके घाटों पर एक बार स्नान करने से व्यक्ति को हजारों यज्ञों के बराबर पुण्य फल प्राप्त होता है।

यह विशाल और रंगा-रंग मेला मुख्य रूप से इसी पवित्र झील के किनारे और उससे सटे हुए 85 हेक्टेयर के एक विशाल मैदान में आयोजित होता है। यहाँ जब ठंडी रेगिस्तानी हवा चलती है, तो हरे-लाल मंदिरों और रंगीन तंबुओं के बीच एक जादुई और मनमोहक माहौल बन जाता है। मेले में आने वाले पर्यटक और श्रद्धालु एक ही जगह पर कई तरह के अनुभव लेते हैं। वे न केवल सरोवर में स्नान करके धार्मिक अनुष्ठान और मंदिरों के दर्शन करते हैं, बल्कि दुनिया के सबसे बड़े ऊँट मेले का रोमांच भी महसूस करते हैं। यह स्थान आस्था, व्यापार और संस्कृति का एक अनूठा संगम प्रस्तुत करता है।

भगवान ब्रह्मा और विश्वामित्र से जुड़ी पौराणिक कथाएँ

पुष्कर नाम की उत्पत्ति संस्कृत के दो शब्दों से हुई है। ‘पुष्प’ (कमल) और ‘कर’ (हाथ)। पौराणिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार, इस स्थान का गहरा संबंध भगवान ब्रह्मा से है। पद्म पुराण में वर्णित है कि जब वज्रनाभ नामक राक्षस देवताओं के बच्चों को मारकर आतंक फैला रहा था, तब उसका वध करने के लिए ब्रह्मा जी ने अपने हाथ से एक कमल फेंका। उस कमल की तीन पंखुड़ियाँ धरती पर गिरीं, जिनसे ज्येष्ठ, मध्य और कनिष्ठा नाम के तीन पुष्कर सरोवरों का निर्माण हुआ।

इसके बाद ब्रह्मा जी ने यहाँ एक यज्ञ शुरू किया, लेकिन शुभ मुहूर्त पर उनकी पत्नी देवी सावित्री (सरस्वती) देरी से पहुँचीं। मुहूर्त चूकने से बचने के लिए, ब्रह्मा जी ने गायत्री से विवाह करके उनके साथ यज्ञ पूरा किया। इससे क्रोधित होकर, देवी सावित्री ने ब्रह्मा जी को श्राप दिया कि उनकी पूजा केवल पुष्कर में ही होगी। यही कारण है कि दुनिया में ब्रह्मा जी का एकमात्र मुख्य मंदिर यहीं पर स्थित है, जिसका पुन:निर्माण 14वीं शताब्दी में महाराणा मोकलजी द्वारा करवाया गया था।

विश्वामित्र और पुष्कर की महत्ता

पुष्कर का इतिहास केवल ब्रह्मा जी तक ही सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि यह स्थान महर्षि विश्वामित्र की कथा से भी जुड़ा हुआ है। रामायण के अनुसार, महर्षि विश्वामित्र ने इसी स्थान पर हजारों वर्षों तक कठोर तपस्या की थी। उनकी इस तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर ब्रह्मा जी ने उन्हें राजर्षि से ब्रह्मर्षि का पद प्रदान किया। हालाँकि, अप्सरा मेनका ने इसी सरोवर में स्नान करके उनकी तपस्या भंग की थी। अंततः, यह भी माना जाता है कि विश्वामित्र जी ने ही यहाँ ब्रह्मा मंदिर का निर्माण करवाया था। रामायण के सर्ग 62 के 28वें श्लोक में पुष्कर की महिमा का उल्लेख मिलता है, जिसमें विश्वामित्र द्वारा यहाँ तपस्या करने की बात कही गई है। इस धार्मिक महत्व को दर्शाने वाला विश्वामित्र आश्रम भी इसी क्षेत्र में स्थित है।

पुष्कर मेले की 150 वर्ष पुरानी परंपरा

पुष्कर मेले का इतिहास 18वीं शताब्दी जितना पुराना है, जब मराठा शासन के दौरान यह व्यापार मार्गों का एक प्रमुख केंद्र बन चुका था। हालाँकि, मेले को आधिकारिक पहचान ब्रिटिश शासनकाल में मिली, जब इसका पहला आधिकारिक आयोजन 1869 में किया गया था।

1900 के दशक की शुरुआत में, यहाँ के राजपूत राजाओं ने इस आयोजन में घोड़े और ऊँटों की दौड़ को शामिल करना शुरू कर दिया। स्वतंत्रता के बाद, 1950 के दशक के बाद राजस्थान सरकार ने इसमें सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमों को जोड़ा, जिससे मेले का महत्व तेजी बढ़ता चला गया। इसकी वैश्विक महत्ता को देखते हुए, यूनेस्को ने 2005 में इसे ‘अमूर्त सांस्कृतिक विरासत’ के रूप में मान्यता दी।

भले ही पहला सरकारी मेला 1869 में आयोजित हुआ हो, लेकिन राजस्थान की लोक संस्कृति और लोक कथाओं के अनुसार, यह मेला दशकों से यहाँ तक कि सदियों से, पुष्कर के रेगिस्तान में आयोजित होता आ रहा है। यह प्राचीन परंपरा आज भी जीवंत है और हर साल इस मेले में 2 लाख से 5 लाख तक पर्यटक शामिल होते हैं।

विश्व का सबसे बड़ा पशु मेला और उसका आकर्षण

पुष्कर मेले का मुख्य आकर्षण यहाँ होने वाला पशु व्यापार है, जिसे दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा ऊँट मेला भी कहा जाता है। इस मेले में 30,000 से 50,000 तक ऊँट, घोड़े, गाय और बैल इकट्ठा होते हैं। यहाँ व्यापारी अपने ऊँटों को रंग-बिरंगे कपड़ों, घंटियों और गहनों से खूब सजाते हैं, जिनकी कीमत ₹20,000 से लेकर ₹5 लाख तक पहुँच जाती है। हालाँकि, नागौर का रामदेव पशु मेला भी भारत में प्रसिद्ध है, लेकिन धार्मिक और सांस्कृतिक मेल के कारण पुष्कर मेला बिल्कुल अनूठा बन जाता है।

मेले में हर दिन विभिन्न प्रतियोगिताओं और आयोजनों की धूम रहती है। जहाँ पशुओं की प्रतियोगिताओं में ऊँट दौड़, सबसे सुंदर ऊँट और ऊँट दुहने की प्रतियोगिता आकर्षण का केंद्र होती हैं, वहीं मनुष्यों के लिए भी कई मजेदार खेल आयोजित किए जाते हैं। पहले दिन मांडणा प्रतियोगिता, स्कूल नृत्य और ‘चक दे राजस्थान’ फुटबॉल मैच होता है। अगले दिनों में लंगड़ी टाँग, गिल्ली डंडा, कबड्डी, मटका दौड़, सबसे लंबी मूँछ और पगड़ी बाँधने की प्रतियोगिताएँ शामिल रहती हैं। इन सबके अलावा, शाम होते ही कालबेलिया नृत्य, लोक गीत और रामायण के मंचन जैसे सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमों से रातें रंगीन हो जाती हैं।
