Heart of the Beast: Movie Overview

Heart of the Beast is an upcoming American survival thriller film directed by David Ayer and written by Cameron Alexander, starring Brad Pitt, who also serves as a producer.

The film is scheduled to be released on September 25, 2026.

In March 2024, David Ayer signed on as director with a script by Cameron Alexander that was featured on the 2017 Black List of the year’s ‘most liked’ unproduced screenplays; Alexander served as an executive producer. Damien Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton produced the film through their label Wild Chickens Productions, with Paramount Pictures distributing as part of a first look deal between the companies, and Ayer and Chris Long serve as producers through Cedar Park Entertainment. In January 2025, Brad Pitt was announced to be starring in the project, also producing under his Plan B Entertainment banner. Temple Hill Entertainment also joined the project, with Ayer now producing under Crave Films. In February, J. K. Simmons joined the cast, with Anna Lambe joining a month later.

Principal photography began on March 3, 2025, in Queenstown, New Zealand, and wrapped on May 15.

Jared Michael Fry was hired to compose the score for the film, marking his third collaboration with Ayer following The Beekeeper (2024) and A Working Man (2025).

Heart of the Beast is scheduled to be released in the United States by Paramount Pictures on September 25, 2026. Its first trailer was shown at CinemaCon in April 2026.

Brad Pitt’s Survival Thriller Packs Plenty of Bite

Story:

Army Special Forces veteran James Belmont (Brad Pitt) and his loyal military combat dog, Odin, find themselves stranded in the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness. Battling treacherous terrain, sub-zero temperatures and the relentless forces of nature, the pair must rely on each other to survive.

Review:

At first glance, Heart of the Beast feels like a familiar survival thriller. A man stranded in the wilderness, impossible odds stacked against him, and a desperate race against time. But beneath its straightforward premise lies a surprisingly emotional story about resilience, trauma and the extraordinary bond between a soldier and his dog.

Director David Ayer plays it slow, but not safe. Right from the start, Cameron Alexander’s story builds a sense of impending doom steadily and consistently. The film wastes little time in throwing Army Special Forces veteran James Belmont and his combat dog Odin into the deep end, quite literally, and then watching them claw, crawl and limp their way through one challenge after another.

Mauro Fiore’s cinematography deserves a special mention. His visuals are so immersive that they practically transport you to the Alaskan wilderness and keep you there. The endless snow, the icy rivers, the towering mountains and the biting cold all become characters in their own right. The film does an excellent job of making you feel the isolation and danger surrounding its protagonists.

That said, Heart of the Beast isn’t always able to maintain the same momentum throughout its 101-minute runtime. Once the premise is established, some of the survival beats start chasing their own tail. The cycle of obstacle, escape and recovery becomes repetitive and sometimes even a bit unconvincing.

But where the film never loses its footing is in its emotional core. This is not really a story about surviving nature. It’s a story about surviving together. The makers carefully unravel the scale of the bond between a man and his dog, and that emotional connection becomes the film’s strongest asset. When the action begins to feel familiar, it is the relationship between James and Odin that keeps you invested.

For Brad Pitt, who also serves as co-producer, this has to be among the most physically demanding performances of his career. As James Belmont, Pitt puts himself through extreme situations that look genuinely uncomfortable and exhausting. You don’t just watch his struggle — you feel it. Many of the film’s quieter moments are also its most relatable, particularly for anyone who has ever shared their life with a pet.

Equally superb is the German Shepherd playing Odin. With eyes that seem to hold entire conversations and expressions that communicate fear, loyalty and affection, Odin often steals scenes without uttering a sound. The chemistry and bromance between James and Odin is genuinely heartwarming and gives the film its bark and its bite.

Heart of the Beast may occasionally wander off the trail and get caught in repetitive terrain, but its powerful performances, stunning visuals and deeply felt emotional bond ensure it always finds its way back home. Not every survival thriller leaves paw prints on your heart. This one does.
