Movie Review:

A wild, unhinged concoction of satire, climate crisis and reality

Story:

Digger Rockwell (Tom Cruise), an aging American oil tycoon, lives in an isolated mansion with his ailing white cat. Accustomed to getting his way and surrounded by people too afraid to disappoint him, Digger is not easily rattled. However, when the consequences of his reckless actions in Greenland threaten to unleash a climate catastrophe across Northern Europe, he is forced to confront a crisis of his own making.

Review:

With the help of Dr. Ganesh (Riz Ahmed) and the President of the United States, Digger must race against time to contain the damage and halt the unfolding disaster. But can a man who spent his life exploiting the planet and people, find a way to save it?

Alejandro Iñárritu’s dystopian farcical tale unfolds like a fascinating mystery, a strange puzzle layered with two glorious twists that leave you utterly spellbound. The final revelation catches you completely off guard, striking with the force of a thunderbolt in the film’s last scene. The discovery of Iñárritu’s singular execution and the audacity of his vision, revealed through the intricate construction of his storytelling is so vivid and immersive that you remain glued to your seat, revelling in its sheer brilliance long after the end credits have rolled. This is a spoiler-free review, so certain plot details have been deliberately withheld to preserve the viewing experience.

Oscillating between over-the-top satire and brutal social commentary on the climate crisis and geopolitical disasters cultivated by the United States, often at the hands of old lunatics in positions of power, Digger goes all out. It doesn’t think twice before taking a savage dig at America, its money-grabbing businessmen, and a comical President whose warped policies carry dangerous global repercussions.

For decades, pop culture has fed us the familiar narrative of America as the world’s saviour. Digger unmasks that pretence and goes for the jugular. It works as an audacious truth-teller, the kind of film that makes you wonder whether Bollywood could ever attempt something this brazen, given its censorship and tendency to toe the line.

Only Americans could think that bombing an ice shelf is a solution! Digger takes a savage swing at America, its policies, and its President. Even as it swings between deliberate clownery and pointed commentary, it remains intent on holding people accountable for their actions and for the damage they have inflicted on the world.

Technically accomplished and steeped in whimsical aesthetics, theatrical framing, a hypnotic background score, and the tragedy of reality concealed beneath its humour, Digger initially feels like a Wes Anderson film. But it soon develops a distinct identity of its own. It blows your mind with its intricate interplay of fact and fiction, making Tom Cruise’s demanding central performance all the more remarkable. He slips in and out of character with the ease and effortlessness of a seasoned actor, often unfairly reduced to his superstar image. Here, he brings his formidable star power to Digger, yet dares to strip it away, surrendering himself completely to the writing and the character. Riz Ahmed is equally integral to the film, delivering a flawless performance in a substantial supporting role.

In an age when controlling the narrative is prioritised over saving the world, Digger makes a compelling case for transparency and for saving civilisation before it’s too late. It’s the kind of entertainment that will resonate with viewers who are socially conscious, empathetic, and reasonably familiar with the geopolitical tensions and climate disasters looming over us. Think Ricky Gervais’ legendary Golden Globes monologue, ruthlessly shaming the rich and privileged sitting in the same room, colliding with the manic energy of a lovestruck Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah’s couch. If you’re game for this strange and lethal concoction of roast and reality, Digger is quite a ride.
