Japan breaks Guinness world record: Largest kaki no tane

Niigata, Japan – November 14, 2016 – The record-breaking “kaki no tane,” one of Japan’s most popular traditional snacks, measures a whopping 55.4 centimeters and has been crowned the largest ever, being about 22 times the length of a regular one; it was unveiled at the head office of confectioner Kameda Seika Co.

The Guinness World Records world record for the largest canned food structure consisted of 247,580 cans and was achieved by the Architecture Students of Chulalongkorn University and the Food Industry Network Co.,Ltd. (both Thailand) at the IMPACT Exhibition Centre, Nonthaburi, Thailand, on 3 March 2011. The overall dimensions of the structure were: height 374.6 (147.48 in); length 857.2 cm; (337.48 in) width 1705.8 (671.57 in).

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest distribution of food samples was achieved by Kraft Foods of Brazil and organized by Saraguato Promotional Marketing (both Brazil), who distributed 623,111 samples of Club Social crackers in Salvador, Brazil, on 14 February 2010.

Usually the tiny snacks are about 2.5 centimeters in length and often mixed up with peanuts to be scoffed while drinking beer, or, perhaps, a pint or two of Tuborg.

The record-breaking “kaki no tane,” one of Japan’s most popular traditional snacks, measures a whopping 55.4 centimeters and has been crowned the largest ever, being about 22 times the length of a regular one, The Asahi Shimbun reports.

“We want to make Japan’s kaki no tane known around the world,” said Isamu Sato, the company president.

It was produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the launch of sales of its kaki no tane product. The cracker is called kaki no tane (persimmon seed) due to its crescent shape.

“The biggest challenge was to maintain the strength of the product,” a person in charge of the project noted.
