What is the mother of pearl?

Pearl is the only gem to come from a living being (Oyster). An Oyster lives for about 30 years. It takes about 10 years to form a pearl. The creature secrets a microscopic element called the nicker. The secretion of nicker forms layer over layer and becomes a pearl. This nicker is called the mother of pearl. It is also the nicker that gives the glow to the pearl.
