Asia s largest tulip garden called Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Siraj Bagh Cheshmashahi Srinagar, in the foothills of Zabarwan range with an overview of Dal Lake presents a soothing view to the eyes.

Tulip Festival: Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Srinagar

Tulip garden previously named as Model Floriculture Centre, Sirajbagh, Cheshmashahi Srinagar, is spread over an area of about 30 ha situated On the foothills of Zabarwan Hills with an overview of picturesque world famous Dal Lake. This garden was conceived, conceptualized and created by Ghulam Nabi Azad, the then Chief Minister, J&K in the year 2006-07. Main aim of this garden is to boost floriculture and advance tourism in Kashmir Valley. Over 12 Lakh tulip bulbs of 68 varieties of different colours sown during November-December, 2007 presented a breathtaking view.

Tulip festival is held annually in the month of March – April when tulips are in full bloom. The garden looks like a silken carpet of bright colored sprawling tulips. The naked brown earth between the rows looks like intricate designs on the carpet. The scene is simply charismatic with floral charm. The view remains in the memory of a visitor forever.

Many varieties of Tulips are grown in the garden spreading over 5 hectares of land at the foothills of Zabarwan overlooking the beauty of world famous Dal Lake. Nearly 60 varieties of beautiful and vibrant tulips grow in this garden. Last year, more than 1,00,000 visitors visited the tulip garden here.

Both local and foreign tourists visit in at the time of Tulip festival and thus contribute a lot in promoting Kashmir as a tourist attraction. The festival continues for 7 days.

Tulip, a member of Liliaceae is native to Persia. Holland is the largest producer of tulips. Now no need to go Holland for having a view of enchanting beauty; the sight is now available in the crown of our country.

Cultural programs, Kashmiri folk songs, sale of local handicrafts, and preparation of traditional Kashmiri cuisine forms an eminent part of the entertainment of visitors during the festival. More information can be found on the Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Website.
