Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala, was established as the National Institute of Sports (NIS) by the Government of India on 7 May 1961, with the objective of facilitating the development of sports in a scientific manner and training of coaches in a myriad of sports disciplines. It was rechristened to NSNIS on 23 January 1973. The NSNIS, housed in the erstwhile Palace of Maharaja of Patiala, presently functions as the Academic Wing of the Sports Authority of India. Since its inception, the institute has produced coaches of high caliber, who lent their expertise in the preparing national teams consisting of talents players, to compete at various international sports competitions.

Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports: Facilities

Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports boasts of providing world-class facilities to its trainees. Within the complex, there is a gymnasium, which consists of sophisticated equipment needed for workout. There is a swimming pool complex too. The Institute has provided three indoor halls for wrestling, boxing, basketball, badminton, table tennis and weightlifting. The Institute also has facilities to practice volleyball, handball and judo. There are two squash courts, one cycling velodrome, a hockey field AstroTurf and three grass fields.

With an 8-lane synthetic track, four-lane grass track and 8-lane cinder tracks, NSNIS provides opportunity for the budding athletes to practice well for their game. Moreover, there are two basketball cement courts and the same number of handball and football grounds. One can avail of the four hard and one grass tennis court as well. For the volleyball enthusiasts, the institute provides four courts. The six cricket nets and a turf wicket cricket ground are helpful for the people, who want to acquire practice in cricket from the Institute.
