Charak: Fair of Faith – Overview

The Kerala Story director Sudipto Sen says his next titled Charak is based on “the twisted idea of misguided faith and blind superstitions”

Filmmaker Sudipto Sen has shared details about his upcoming project, Charak, which he describes as a folklore horror film centred on themes of blind belief and misguided faith. The film draws from traditional practices and aims to examine how fear, superstition, and religious rituals can intersect.

Speaking about the origin of the project, Sudipto exclusively said the idea emerged from observing belief systems that often go unquestioned. “The twisted idea of misguided faith and blind superstitions hidden under the cloak of religion in a cult status Charak festival became the core driving factor to bring forth this unique folklore horror story,” he said.

According to the filmmaker, Charak uses folklore as a narrative setting while addressing broader social concerns. He indicated that the film is intended to go beyond conventional horror by focusing on the psychological and cultural dimensions of fear.

Sudipto also spoke about his approach to collaboration on set. Describing his working style, he said, “Foremost, I let my actors and key technical crew absorb the essence of the film’s screenplay.” He added that once the team understands the underlying themes, the creative process becomes more cohesive.

Discussing performances, Sudipto explained that he encourages actors to internalise the story rather than follow rigid instructions. “My idea of performance in front of the camera is to ingrain my vision in the psyche of actors, who then later interpret it in their own style and method,” he said.

On the technical aspects of filmmaking, Sudipto noted that preparation plays a key role in his process. “I have thoroughly planned my technical and know how I will shoot a shot,” he said, while also acknowledging that unexpected creative moments can emerge during filming.

Charak is all set to release in cinemas on March 6 this year.
