Movie Review:

Sudeep delivers a power-packed, gritty action spectacle

Mark positions itself firmly as a mass entertainer with elements of class, delivering high-voltage moments driven largely by its leading man and technical strength.

The film opens with a chilling mass murder in Kolhapur, introducing Naveen Chandra as Bhadra, a blood-soaked, unhinged rowdy. His violent persona is contrasted with a personal conflict when he learns that his younger brother has eloped against his wishes. The narrative then moves to Bengaluru, where a group of rowdies set the stage for the grand entry of suspended Superintendent of Police Ajay Markanday, aka Mark, played by Sudeep. His introduction is staged in a distinctly Tamil mass cinema style, reminiscent of Vijay’s Vaathi Coming from the film Master—loud, rhythmic, and unapologetically flamboyant—with the song Psycho Saithan and an extended action sequence. Though lengthy, the fight works due to dynamic shots and pulsating music, making it enjoyable rather than exhausting.

The plot gains emotional weight when Mark’s mother is stabbed and hospitalised, and Archana, the young daughter of her caretaker, is kidnapped. As Mark investigates, he discovers that several children have gone missing in recent days. Running parallel is another major conflict involving the murder of a hospitalised Chief Minister, secretly recorded by a missing doctor. Shine Tom Chacko’s Adikeshav—the CM’s son—murders his mother in his ruthless bid to seize power. The second half follows Mark as he connects these threads, hunts down the kidnappers, and unravels the political conspiracy.

From a technical standpoint, Mark is well-mounted. Shekhar Chandra’s camerawork is impressive and stylish, while B Ajaneesh Loknath’s music effectively elevates both action and emotional beats. The first half is tightly paced, with scenes flowing seamlessly, though the film briefly loses momentum just before the interval. The second half leans heavily into action and emotion but would have benefitted from a clearer, more tightly written script.

Sudeep is the undisputed backbone of the film. Aging like fine wine, he looks super fit and commands the screen with ease. His curly-haired look and predominantly dark-toned wardrobe—khaki, black, brown, grey, and green—strongly recall his appearance in Max and suit the character perfectly. You simply can’t take your eyes off him, even if you’re not a die-hard fan. Notably, despite the presence of the item-number-style Mast Malaika, featuring Nishvika and voiced by Sudeep’s daughter Sanvi, the actor seems to be largely avoiding conventional romantic films with much younger co-stars—an admirable and refreshing choice in most of his recent films. Sudeep dominates Mark from start to finish.

Naveen Chandra delivers a solid performance as the volatile rowdy, while Shine Tom Chacko is effective in his negative role. Yogi Babu, despite playing an antagonist, brings in humour as Solomon, lightening the mood in parts. Gopal Krishna Deshpande, Archana Kottige, Roshni Prakash and others are dependable in their supporting roles. However, a noticeable drawback is the inconsistent dubbing and lip-sync issues affecting several characters, which could have been avoidable in a film of this scale.

In conclusion, Mark is a mass movie with some class. The making, performances, and technical values shine, but the narrative stumbles due to uneven pacing and a script that needed more clarity and tightening. Still, for fans of Sudeep and lovers of stylised action thrillers, Mark offers enough highs to make it a watchable, star-driven experience.
