Sciatica: Symptoms, Causes & Its Yogic Treatment

Sciatica Introduction: Sciatica pain is nerve root composition in the leg from buttock, thigh, calves and the ankle. It is a very painful disease. It is Vaata disease. Sciatica is related to slip disc.

Symptoms:

The pain increases while touching the sciatic nerve. The patient is unable to lift his leg in a lying position due to pain in the backside of the leg in the sciatic nerve. Rigidity of the back knee and thigh, loss of appetite, flow of saliva from the mouth, etc. Flesh swelling and curves in limbs occur due to sciatica.

Causes:

Jerks while working, doing heavy work beyond the capacity, sleeping in uneasy bed, getting hurt on the centre of the body, excessive use of cycle, scooter or motorcycle, ignoring the natural calls, tension, excessive anger, lack of sleep, bleeding from anus, walking too much, working in bending position for long period, cold exposure. Continuous pressure on sciatica nerve due to standing and sitting on the chair for long period.

Yogic Treatment:

  1. Shatkarm – Kunjal and enema of normal water daily for five days
  2. Yoga Asanas – Konasana, Garudasana, fifth position of Surya Namaskar, Padmasana, Ustrasana, Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana
  3. Pranayam
  4. Meditation and Yoga Nidra
  5. Bathe in hot water
  6. Avoid peas, potatoes, masoor pulses, rice, and cold things. Eat orange, mango, pomegranate, sattvic, simple food and salad which is easy to digest, green vegetable juice and sprouted cereals
  7. Avoid swimming
  8. Surya swar should be maintained
  9. Mudras – Perform Vayu Mudra, Apaan Mudra and Pran Mudra for 30 minutes each at any time
  10. Massage of spine and legs with mustard oil from down to upwards
  11. Have hot and cold fomentation of the spine
  12. Have hot fomentation of legs daily. After bathing, take a mug of hot water and let is run from hip to toes in a thin stream
  13. Put legs in hot water twice a week
  14. Avoid forward bending, refined foods and smoking
  15. Take 1/2 tsp. sonth with warm water or lukewarm Desi ghee
  16. Boil 10 leaves of Harsingar in one glass of water. Drink 1/2 cup twice a day
  17. Can use ayurvedic googal pills morning and evening with hot water / milk
