The National Ayurveda Day is celebrated every year on the occasion of Dhanwantari Jayanti (Dhanteras) since 2016. Dhanteras is a festival observed in the Hindu month of Kartik (usually October or November). Lord Dhanvantari is considered as divine propagator of Ayurveda. He is conferred with the virtues of granting health and wealth.

The Government of India has designated 23rd September as the date for celebrating Ayurveda Day each year through a Gazette Notification dated 23rd March 2025. Aimed at enhancing global visibility and consistency in observance, this marks a significant shift from the earlier practice of observing Ayurveda Day on Dhanteras, which follows a variable lunar calendar. 23rd September, coincides with the autumnal equinox, a day when day and night are nearly equal. This astronomical event symbolizes balance in nature, perfectly aligning with the Ayurvedic philosophy that emphasizes equilibrium between the mind, body, and spirit. The equinox, representing cosmic harmony, underscores the essence of Ayurveda—living in balance with nature.
Ayurveda is perceived as one of the most ancient and well documented system of medicine equally relevant in modern times. Its holistic approach whether for healthy individuals or for diseased ones remains unparalleled. Prevention of disease and promotion of health is the main aim of Ayurveda.

National Ayurveda Day logo:
The logo for the National Ayurveda Day has the following elements.
- The silhouette of lord Dhanwantari in the centre of the logo represents the lord of Medicine.
- The five petals in logo symbolize Pancha Mahabhuta and three circles beneath signify Vata, Ptta, Kapha, the fundamental principles of Ayurveda.
- An oval leaf encircling the elements depicts the essence of healing through Nature based on these fundamental principles.
National Ayurveda Day 2025: Activities
The focal theme for Ayurveda day-2025 has been decided as ‘Ayurveda for People & Planet’. The theme of this year’s Ayurveda Day celebrations reflects our collective resolve to harness the full potential of Ayurveda for global wellbeing and a healthier planet.
Ayurveda, the original healthcare tradition of humanity, is not just a medical system, but a manifestation of our symbiotic relationship with nature. It is a well-documented systems of healthcare, wherein prevention of disease and promotion of health are both given due consideration.
Ayurveda Day 2025 is envisioned not merely as a ceremonial occasion, but as a step towards positioning Ayurveda as a solution for contemporary global challenges such as lifestyle disorders, climate-linked diseases, and stress management.
The theme ‘Ayurveda Innovation for Global Health‘ has been specifically chosen to highlight the huge research work done in Ayurveda to establish the scientific relevance of Ayurveda in promotion of health and treatment of various disease conditions. This also highlights the relevance of Ayurveda for the healthcare of the people across the globe irrespective of their religion, ethnicity, social status and geographical boundaries. The special focus in innovation would attract and inspire our youngsters to indulge in Ayurveda and establish startup.
The celebrations will include awareness campaigns, youth engagement programmes, wellness consultations, and international collaborations coordinated by the Ministry of Ayush and its institutions.
