Salaar: Part 1 Ceasefire – Overview

Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire is an upcoming Indian Telugu-language action thriller film written and directed by Prashanth Neel, and produced by Vijay Kiragandur. It stars Prabhas as the titular character, along with Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, Tinnu Anand, Easwari Rao, Jagapathi Babu, Sriya Reddy, and Ramachandra Raju.

The film was announced in December 2020 with principal photography beginning in January 2021 near Godavarikhani, Telangana. The music is composed by Ravi Basrur, while the cinematography is done by Bhuvan Gowda.

It is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 28 September 2023.

The film along with its title was announced on 2 December 2020. Touted to be an action thriller, the film marks the first collaboration between director Prashanth Neel and Prabhas, and the first Telugu venture of Neel. On his role, Prabhas stated: “My character is extremely violent, so this is something I haven’t really done before.” A few reports claimed that the film is a remake of Neel’s debut film Ugramm, however, Neel clarified that Salaar is not a remake but an original story written for Prabhas.

The film was formally launched in Hyderabad on 16 January 2021. Ravi Basrur is composing the music while Bhuvan Gowda is the cinematographer.

Actress Shruti Haasan was cast in a leading role in January 2021. Kannada actor Madhu Guruswamy is set to play a pivotal role. In March, actress Easwari Rao was signed to play Salaar’s mother. Later in August, Jagapathi Babu joined the cast, whose character was revealed as Rajamanaar.

In October 2021, Malayalam actor Prithviraj Zukumaran entered talks to play a crucial role in the film. In March 2022, Prabhas said that Prithviraj is part of Salaar during a promotional event for his film Radhe Shyam. Later in June, Prithviraj stated that he gave a nod to the script but was trying to adjust the dates to work in the film. Later in October 2022, Prithiviraj’s role was confirmed and the film marks his return to Telugu cinema after 12 years, following his appearance in Police Police (2010). Sriya Reddy is also cast in a key role.

The film’s shoot began on 29 January 2021 in the coal mines near the city of Godavarikhani, Telangana. First schedule was completed by February 2021. Second schedule of the film began in August 2021 in Hyderabad.

About 30% of the shoot was completed by March 2022. Filming was halted due to the release of Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam (2022) and Neel’s K.G.F: Chapter 2 (2022) and was planned to be resumed in May. However, Prabhas underwent a knee fracture in March during his vacation in Spain, which further delayed the shoot. In June 2022, a new schedule began at Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City with Prabhas and Haasan joining the sets. The team also shot a 20-minute long action sequence in the middle of the sea, spending about ₹10 crore on the scene.

Makers of Salaar reportedly employed Dark Centric Theme (DCT) technology to shoot the film, making it the first Indian film to do so. As a result the film’s lighting pattern and color palette would be darker in color.

The teaser of the film was released on 6 July 2023. The teaser broke all records clocking more than 83 million views in 24 hours, breaking the records of all Indian films.

Salaar Part 1 – Ceasefire is scheduled for a theatrical release on 28 September 2023 in Telugu along with dubbed versions of Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam languages.

Earlier in August 2021, it was announced that the film was going to release on 14 April 2022. The film was later postponed due to Neel and Hombale’s film, K.G.F: Chapter 2 which was scheduled to release on that date. In March 2022, producer Vijay Kiragandur in an interview with Pinkvilla stated that the film was postponed to the second quarter (April–June) of 2023 due to production delays owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. In August 2022, the release date was announced as 28 September 2023.

UV Creations acquired Andhra Pradesh and Telangana distribution rights while KRG Studios in Karnataka state. The film will be distributed in North America by Moksha Movies and Prathyangira Cinemas.

Salaar: Part 1 Ceasefire – Movie Trailer

Movie Review:

‘Two friends in a fictional war-torn city and some unforeseeable circumstances draw a divide between them’ — that’s probably one of the most worked upon loglines ever for any film. But trust Prashanth Neel, who delivered ‘KGF Chapter 2’, the second-highest grossing film of 2022, to work around this theme. ‘Salaar’, however, is a letdown by the director on many fronts. Only the lead actors, Prabhas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, do the heavy lifting.

Just like in ‘KGF’, here too one finds unabashed violence, hooliganism, high-octane action sequences, and some suspense. The screenplay and dubbed dialogues are weak and do not touch an emotional chord. The non-linear pattern of storytelling has not been used to its advantage. For a two-hour, 51-minute movie, to have a weak first half spells ‘failure’. If it were not for the review, or die-hard fans of Prabhas, I wonder if one would even stay for the climax.

While the first half leaves you clueless and you feel as if you’ve missed ‘Part Zero’ or a preview to the main film, the second half answers the whys. For a two-part ‘Salaar’(Salaar: Part 2 — Shouryanga Parvam, releasing soon as unveiled in the climax) Neel might have tried to build a strong foundation but it seems all the budget went into bringing big names — actors, cinematographer (Bhuvan Gowda) and action directors Anbumani and Arivumani. Had he given more thought to the screenplay, dialogues and background score, it would have turned out to be a better product. Even the cliffhanger isn’t 20 per cent of “Kattapa ne Baahubali ko kyun maara?” This time, Neel gave a TV serial treatment to a big-budget script.

The camaraderie or bromance between Prabhas and Prithviraj Sukumaran is the saving grace. Prabhas as Deva/Salaar delivers more with his action. Prabhas pulls off violence with innocence as every time he unleashes havoc on the enemy, he endearingly says, ‘Sorry Yaar’. Sukumaran as Vardha is also a likeable character and holds promising potential for an upcoming Part 2. As you are time and again taken back to ‘KGF’, the director seems to be in a hurry to create his own crime universe with Yash, the lead actor of ‘KGF’, and Prabhas at the centrestage. The reference to mining, oppression of the labour class and the game of power are Neel’s favourite themes. But most importantly, the so-called democratic system, with leaders, police and the military all acting like cowards or fans of these violent heroes, is still incomprehensible.

Just one advice, while creating a dystopian place with an autocratic rule, why not keep geography out of it and keep the names fictional, and not confuse the audience.

An applause for Neel for taking ‘KGF’ feedback seriously and bringing in more women characters. Except for the lead heroine, Shruti Haasan, every other female character is well etched. Neel has left too much work for the second part.

Watch at your own risk because it’s something that can’t be fixed with a ‘Sorry Yaar’from Prabhas.
