Movie Review:
A glossy rom-com that relies on familiar tropes
Story:
After falling in love while cruising in Croatia, writer Rumi Vardhan (Ananya Panday) and wedding planner Rehaan ‘Ray’ Mehra (Kartik Aaryan) want to get hitched. However, Rumi’s father refuses to leave their ancestral home, while her sister prepares to move to Canada after marriage, leaving Rumi torn between love and duty. What unfolds is a tug-of-war between personal desire and familial responsibility.
Review:
Rumi is on a quest to live a 1990s love story in the hook-up culture of 2025. According to her, there are certain stages before the happily-ever-after — friction, friendship, love, and conflict, with parental opposition being the final hurdle. Forced to share a cabin with a hunky but brash Ray while on a yacht across Croatia, the duo moves through the first three stages fairly quickly. The fourth arrives when Rumi’s father, a retired colonel referred to as Baba (Jackie Shroff), meets with an accident, prompting her to end her relationship. The remainder of the film revolves around Ray trying to win back Rumi’s love and, more importantly, her father’s affection.
Director Sameer Vidwans and writer Karan Shrikant Sharma’s romantic comedy leans heavily on the modern Bollywood romance template, blending international settings with rooted Indian family dynamics. The first half is devoted to glossy Croatian locales such as Hvar and Lavender Village. While visually appealing, this stretch offers little novelty, following a familiar arc where the leads begin on the wrong foot, sparks fly, and romance predictably blooms. Baba’s backstory, however, proves less convincing. His somnambulism, as a crucial plot point, feels poorly thought through. Someone with a history of sleepwalking would likely be disqualified from joining the army, and the condition is used conveniently to trigger his accident when he wanders out of the house after the gate is left ajar at night.
The narrative picks up some momentum in the second half when Ray’s mother, Pinky (Neena Gupta), pushes him to return to India and fight for the relationship. Although the pace improves, the story and screenplay rely on familiar tropes, such as Rumi’s sister’s wedding, Ray buying a wedding-planning agency overnight to stay close to her, and bonding with Baba over home-cooked meals. Repeated scenes reinforcing Ray’s desirability feel a bit forced and repetitive.
Vishal-Shekhar’s soundtrack offers a few bright spots, with hummable tracks like Dil Musafir by Lucky Ali and the title song by the composer duo.
Ananya Panday delivers one of her more assured performances, handling Rumi’s inner conflict with restraint. Kartik Aaryan brings his usual charm to Ray, balancing humour with emotional moments, and their chemistry works in the film’s favour. The final payoff is predictable and mildly satisfying, as the film attempts to question long-held expectations placed on a woman’s family after marriage.
With just a few parts landing, this rom-com may only appeal to those drawn to contemporary, glossy romances.
