Scream 7: Overview

Scream 7 is an upcoming American slasher film directed by Kevin Williamson from a screenplay written by Guy Busick and Williamson, from a story by James Vanderbilt and Busick. It is a sequel to Scream VI (2023) and the seventh installment in the Scream film series. The film stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding reprising their roles from previous films, alongside Isabel May, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, Mckenna Grace, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, Asa Germann, Celeste O’Connor, Sam Rechner, Ethan Embry, Tim Simons, and Mark Consuelos.

Following the exit of Scream (2022) and Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett in August 2023, Christopher Landon was hired to direct the seventh Scream film. However, the film went through a creative retooling after the departure of stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega in late 2023, with Landon also exiting the project. In March 2024, Campbell confirmed her return to the franchise after being absent from Scream VI, with Williamson hired to direct Scream 7 after serving as writer and producer of the early films in the series. Filming began in January 2025 and concluded that March.

Scream 7 is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 27, 2026, by Paramount Pictures.

Movie Review:

This slasher ride will keep you on the edge of your seat, even if it doesn’t quite make you scream with fright

Story:

In the seventh volume of the horror franchise, a new Ghostface killer strikes the sleepy town where the final girl, Sidney (Neve Campbell), now lives. When he begins targeting her daughter, Tatum (Isabel May), Sidney is forced to protect her family while confronting her bloody past once again.

Review:

The requel (reboot + sequel) to the sixth outing from 2023 continues the saga, albeit without several familiar faces, including Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. The setting shifts from bustling New York back to the quieter Pine Grove, where Sidney has built a life with her cop husband, Mark (Joel McHale), and their teenage daughter, Tatum, who’s now the same age Sidney was when the nightmare first began. The mother-daughter duo is going through a rough patch, as Tatum isn’t fully aware of the trauma her mother faced, while the overprotective Sidney stonewalls her to shield her from her bloody history. However, the past has a way of resurfacing. A chilling video call shatters their normalcy, placing both Sidney and her daughter, dubbed as Sidney 2.0, in the killer’s sights.

What follows is a familiar slasher ride, as a new batch of teenagers finds itself entangled in Ghostface’s deadly game, scrambling to survive. The film begins with a bang, as a couple on a date at the infamous Macher House meets a grisly fate, setting the tone for the carnage to come. It scores high on jump scares right from the beginning, and every turn and shadow keeps one on edge, constantly anticipating the next horror. The movie leans into franchise nostalgia, using Woodsboro and its haunted landmarks and characters.

Director Kevin Williamson nods to various franchise and genre elements. There’s a reference to Jamie Lee Curtis and the Halloween franchise, there’s the movie series Stab within the movie, and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) tells Sidney she was lucky to have sat the previous part out because it was brutal. Cinematographer Ramsey Nickell evokes the horror in many instances, and there’s enough gore and terrifying sequences across the 114-minute runtime.

The narrative follows the familiar path of building suspense by presenting an array of suspects, but it doesn’t follow through effectively. The action and scares are good enough, but not extraordinary. The finale is decent, though it doesn’t shock or impress much.

Neve Campbell stays in character and is powerful as the wary mother with trust issues. Isabel May embodies Tatum well, as the daughter trying to get through to her mother while grappling with her own shyness and the expectation of being brave like Sidney. Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, Jasmin Savoy Brown as the sassy Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Asa Germann deliver solid turns, too.

Scream 7 is a decent entry in the franchise that delivers ample thrills and chills, making it a crowd-friendly watch and a decently watchable experience.
