Movie Review:
A familiar revenge ride with Jason Statham in fine form
Story:
Cole Reed (Jason Statham) is a former Royal Marine and cop, and now an elite bodyguard, seeking revenge for his industrialist boss Tibu Campallo’s (Ramon Tikaram) assassination. When he infiltrates a cargo ship as the assassins sail off, he teams up with the third mate, Angie Ellis (Annabelle Wallis), to save victims of human trafficking while annihilating the crooks.
Review:
The film lies somewhere between out-and-out high-octane actioners like The Expendables and more character-driven thrillers like John Wick. Writers Lindsay Michel and J P Davis’s story and screenplay are pretty straightforward — formulaic, even. The movie first establishes the friendship between Tibu and Reed, as they play chess and discuss life. Tibu prides himself on building a successful cargo shipping business without resorting to corruption or wrongdoing. So, when he is assassinated the night he sells his business, Reed vows revenge. During his mission, he faces the ship’s captain, Marko Madsen (Roland Møller), who is trafficking people.
The narrative has all the elements you expect of the genre and a Statham fare. The labyrinthine vessel makes for an intriguing set piece, but it also slows the film’s pace, making the viewer feel like they’re on a ship tour for much of the film. The human trafficking angle, too, feels like a side note, added largely to get Cole and Angie on the same side. Director Jean-François Richet handles the action efficiently. The hand-to-hand combat and chases across the ship are staged with impact, though some sequences turn quite gory, including one involving a padlock being used to slash faces.
While the movie gets the action right, the characterizations remain underdeveloped, as does the conspiracy behind Tibu’s murder. Once the sale of the business is halted, the motive becomes apparent, but the identity of the person behind the assassination is concealed until the end. That said, the mystery is resolved rather quickly, making the payoff underwhelming. Some aspects, such as the navy personnel who answer the distress call and how easily they believe Cole and Angie, also feel unconvincing.
Despite these flaws, the film remains watchable for its action and, most of all, Jason Statham. Cole’s backstory as a former Marine and fallen cop is familiar territory, but Statham delivers the part convincingly, shifting smoothly from a sophisticated, sharply suited bodyguard to a rugged man on a revenge path. Annabelle Wallis is decent in her role, though her character remains underexplored, while Roland Møller makes for a menacing antagonist.
The film does not break new ground and follows a familiar action-thriller formula, but it delivers enough combat, chases and Statham-style toughness to hold attention. For genre fans, especially those watching for its leading man, it makes for a reasonably entertaining actioner.
