Movie Review:

A handful of laughs, overwhelmed by loud cringe

Story:

Three bored husbands—Meet (Vivek Oberoi), Prem (Aftab Shivdasani) and Amar (Riteish Deshmukh)—crave escape from their monotonous marriages. A mischievous plan offers the thrill they’ve been missing, but their quest for freedom spirals into chaos none of them ever imagined.

Review:

Four films in, the Masti franchise knows exactly what it wants to be—and it rarely pretends otherwise. Audiences walking into Mastiii 4 are already familiar with its perennial template: three men exhausted by the monotony of marriage, seeking “harmless fun,” and stumbling into a whirlwind of chaos, misunderstandings and innuendo-driven humour. While the formula has previously delivered laughs, its fourth outing leans heavily on nostalgia and farcical energy, offering intermittent amusement but very little freshness. The result is a film that entertains in bursts but feels overstretched, predictable and frequently grating.

Set in the UK, the story follows neighbours and long-time friends Amar (Riteish Deshmukh), Meet (Vivek Oberoi) and Prem (Aftab Shivdasani), each stuck in a different shade of domestic dullness. Amar is married to Bindiya (Elnaaz Norouzi), whose obsession with charity borders on caricature. Meet struggles under the hyper-suspicion of his wife Anchal (Shreya Sharma), who tracks his vitals and behaviour through an app synced to his phone. Meanwhile, Prem, a doctor, lives with Geeta (Ruhi Singh), whose enthusiastic participation in every religious ritual creates constant comedic clashes. When the trio attempts to rejuvenate their uneventful lives, their small escapade snowballs into a high-stakes mess filled with relentless chaos. Matters become even wilder once their wives decide to indulge in some “masti” of their own, adding another layer of fun.

Director Milap Milan Zaveri—who co-writes the film with Farrokh Dhondy—leans heavily on the trio’s chemistry, and to his credit, the camaraderie between Vivek, Aftab and Riteish remains the franchise’s strongest pillar. Their loud-but-earnest performances and easy banter keep several portions afloat. Zaveri also sprinkles familiar Bollywood spoofs, from a cheeky Animal dialogue—“sunai de raha hai, behra nahi hoon main”—to a recreated Amar Akbar Anthony sequence. Some land well; others feel overstretched, dragging the humour until it fizzles out.
The film maintains pace, but its reliance on cringe humour is exhausting. Many gags are built around tired sexual innuendos, slapstick exaggerations and genital jokes that feel dated even within the adult-comedy genre. While a few punchlines genuinely amuse, several others induce irritation rather than laughter. The writing desperately needed sharper wit and fresher comedic beats. The songs contribute little beyond lengthening the runtime, with none leaving a memorable mark.

In terms of performances, the cast embraces the film’s unapologetic tone. Riteish Deshmukh emerges as the most consistent performer, delivering sharp punchlines with impeccable timing. Aftab Shivdasani, true to his franchise persona, is loud but occasionally effective, while Vivek Oberoi appears unusually tired, lacking the spark needed for such spirited humour. Among the cameos, Arshad Warsi is reliably amusing, and Nargis Fakhri is pleasant.

The supporting cast adds mixed value. Tusshar Kapoor, playing Don Pablo, is funny in parts though his exaggerated Bihari accent becomes distracting. Shaad Randhawa is decent as the investigating cop, and Nishant Malkhani makes a decent, if limited, debut. On the female front, Elnaaz Norouzi gets the meatiest role and fares well despite her obvious accent; Ruhi Singh delivers adequately, while debutante Shreya Sharma is serviceable though unremarkable. Their attempts to elevate the glamour quotient are brief and ultimately inconsequential.
In the end, Mastiii 4 caters strictly to fans of adult comedies who enjoy unabashed silliness, loud performances and low-brow humour. It offers a handful of laughs and some comfort-zone nostalgia for franchise loyalists. For everyone else, it’s a loud, uneven and often cringe-filled ride best avoided.
