Kartam Bhugtam, which roughly translates as what goes around comes around, is a blend of psychological thriller and revenge drama that tackles the dark underbelly of superstition and fake godmen. The film is set against the contrasting backdrops of Bhopal and Bangkok, with the latter providing a more engaging and visually appealing setting.
Dev Joshi (Shreyas Talpade) is an auckland based NRI who returns to his hometown of Bhopal after ten years due to the unexpected demise of his father. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Anna (Vijay Raaz), an astrologer whose predictions always come true. Dev’s primary goal is to consolidate his deceased father’s assets and cash. However, things don’t go as planned. He’s stymied by circumstances all the way. Tired of it all, he starts taking Anna’s advice and his fortunes start to turn. But he finds himself caught in a web of superstition and starts losing his mind. How he gets out of it all and regains his sanity and wealth forms the crux of the story.
The narrative unfolds slowly in the first half, which may test the patience of some viewers. However, once it gains momentum, the story becomes gripping, maintaining tension and intrigue till the end. The plot effectively utilises the dual settings to enhance the narrative, with the Bangkok sequences standing out for their execution and impact.
The film’s sound design and background score, however, leave much to be desired. A more polished and evocative auditory experience could have significantly elevated the overall atmosphere and emotional depth of the movie.
Vijay Raaz excels as the sinister antagonist, bringing a chilling intensity to his role. Shreyas Talpade, as the determined protagonist, delivers a commendable performance, effectively portraying a man driven by revenge and justice. Madhoo, who is seen in a Hindi film after a while is effective in her limited role, that of a conniving wife to the fake godman. The same can be said of Aksha Pardasany, who plays Shreyas’ supportive girlfriend in the film.
Kartam Bhugtam deserves praise for its social commentary, as it boldly addresses the issues of blind faith and the exploitation by fraudulent godmen. This underlying message adds a layer of relevance and thought-provoking content to the film, making it more than just a standard thriller. Soham P Shah has made a comeback of sorts to Hindi films after Luck (2009) with Kartam Bhugtam. He has also written the film and while his idea was spot on, the execution is wobbly in parts.
In summary, while Kartam Bhugtam has its flaws, particularly in pacing and sound design, it ultimately succeeds due to its strong performances, engaging second half, and poignant social message. It is a worthwhile watch for those who enjoy thrillers with a deeper, reflective narrative.
