Evil Dead Burn is an upcoming American supernatural horror film serving as the third standalone entry, after Evil Dead (2013) and Evil Dead Rise (2023), and the sixth installment in the Evil Dead film series. Directed and co-written by Sébastien Vaniček, and produced by Rob Tapert and series creator Sam Raimi, it stars Souheila Yacoub, Tandi Wright, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan, Erroll Shand, Maude Davey, George Pullar, and Greta Van Den Brink.

Evil Dead Burn is scheduled to be theatrically released in France and Italy on July 8, 2026, followed by the United States on July 10.

A gonzo gorefest for splatter-horror loyalists

Story:

An ancient demonic curse is unleashed upon a family, claiming its son, Will (George Pullar), first. When his widow, Alice (Souheila Yacoub), joins her in-laws for Will’s funeral at their secluded home, the family members turn into Deadites one by one. Will she survive the carnage?

Review:

The familiar world of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis (the Book of the Dead) and the cursed passages that unleash Kandarian demons return with unrelenting gore in director Sébastien Vanicek’s movie. Joseph (Hunter Doohan), a writer trying to make it big, unknowingly unseals his grandfather’s copy of the Book of the Dead, freeing the demons.

The pre-credits sequence sets the tone with a demonic entity rising from a lake and ripping apart a hapless man with tackle, line, and fishing hooks. The story then moves to Will, an abusive husband who speeds off after a public argument with his French wife, Alice. He becomes the next victim of the Deadite, also tying back to his grandfather’s obsessive hunt for a Kandarian dagger that the ghouls seek and can destroy them. As his family gathers to mourn him at their secluded home, the carnage begins.

Vanicek and co-writer Florent Bernard deliver a splatter horror that is as mean, cruel, and frenzied as one would expect from the franchise. If the previous instalment, Evil Dead Rise, got the bloodfest right, this chapter goes a step further. The gore and brutality are relentless and splendidly staged in a macabre way. There are demonic elements, but only a few traditional supernatural jump scares. Instead, the film relies more on sudden attacks, mutilation, bodily horror, and the sheer shock of violence to make you gasp and turn away.

Philip Lozano’s cinematography stands out not only for capturing the carnage but also for framing the desolate house and bleak landscape. The practical effects are masterfully done, adding a nauseating realism to the blood-soaked set pieces. While most scenes are revolting, a handful are genuinely terrifying, especially the possessed father, Edgar (Erroll Shand), repeatedly shooting himself in the face.

The tension remains constantly escalated, if not through horror, then through the family’s equation. Will’s parents blame Alice for his death, while his mother, Susan (Tandi Wright), is a weary woman who has sacrificed much for the family. The movie also gets a few darkly comic moments through the grandmother, Polly (Maude Davey), who suffers from dementia. At a little under two hours, the film moves at a brisk pace, though it slackens during Alice’s ‘final girl’ act.

Souheila Yacoub is brilliant as the resilient Alice, not only for facing the Deadites but also for the hatred that comes her way and stoically hiding that Will was, in fact, an abusive husband. Tandi Wright is outstanding as Susan, a mother fiercely devoted to family values. Erroll Shand truly terrifies as the angry father and ferocious Deadite. Maude Davey, Hunter Doohan, George Pullar, and Luciane Buchanan lend able support.

While Evil Dead Burn is visceral and gets the gonzo gore perfectly, it will appeal only to those who like splatter horror. Those who get squeamish at the sight of innards and flesh are better off skipping this one.
