A Quirky Premise Undone by a Meandering Narrative

Story:

When a young man from Varanasi, Murli (Vyom Yadav), asks for his girlfriend Mehak’s (Pallak Lalwani) hand in marriage, her wealthy family puts forth a curious condition: the household must have at least one female family member. Murli thus sets off to arrange his widowed father Durlabh Prasad’s (Sanjay Mishra) marriage. As the father’s former lover Babita (Mahima Chaudhary) re-enters his life, will the young couple be reunited?

Review:

A son looking for a bride for his ageing, widowed father in a small town makes for an intriguing premise. Writers Aadesh K Arjun and Prashant Singh, along with director Siddhant Raj Singh, pepper the story with local Banarasi flavours, along with quirky characters. The film swiftly establishes its basic plot when a loutish Murli is forcibly taken to the wealthy Mehak’s house in a ‘bermuda, baniyan’ and gamchha to meet her family. While Mehak’s father outright rejects him, the women of the household agree to the match, only if Murli gets his father married first.

What follows is a hunt for his new maa: consulting astrologer, on a desi version of Tinder, and even at a var-vadhu mela. While these tracks elicit some chuckles, the quest itself largely remains uneventful. The film’s second act focuses on Babita and Durlabh rekindling their friendship. However, in a turn of events, Mehak’s father wants Durlabh and Babita to break up, arguing that Babita, a smoking, bold woman, is not wall-suited to be his daughter’s mother-in-law. Whether the senior couple sacrifices their relationship once again becomes a pivotal moment in the narrative.

Overall, the film’s storytelling meanders and feels loose, despite touching upon potent themes such as jilted lovers reuniting in old age, expectations from independent women, and parents prioritising their children’s happiness over their own. None of the plot points follow a fully satisfying arc, with resolutions that feel rushed and convenient. One of the stronger highlights is Babita taking a stand for herself, though even this is somewhat undone by a haphazard ending.

Anil Singh’s cinematography deserves a mention, as he captures the essence of Varanasi and its ghats with finesse. The play of lights and camera work in several sequences elevates the narrative.

Strong performances help offset some of the narrative missteps. Sanjay Mishra shines as the loving but wishy-washy Durlabh and excels in the comedic portions. Mahima Chaudhary is good as Babita, a social worker who lives life on her own terms, and shares an easy, likeable chemistry with Mishra. Vyom Yadav is the surprise package and pulls off his act with confidence. Pallak Lalwani, as Mehak, also delivers a decent performance.

While the film has a few warm moments, it’s unable to fully realise the promise of its premise.
