Movie Review:

An interesting premise undercut by an uneven screenplay.

Adhvaith Nayar’s Chatha Pacha is a film with its share of ups and downs. There are portions that are highly entertaining, followed by stretches where the narrative seems to jump all over the place. While the decision to limit the personal interactions between the two lead characters is understandable—given the chosen premise and central conflict—those interactions could have been developed more effectively.

The basic storyline itself is not new, but the incorporation of costume wrestling into the narrative adds an interesting dimension. However, it is not the high voltage WWE inspired film that was promised. Adhvaith Nayar’s story was developed into a screenplay by Sanoop Thykoodam.

To begin with, there is little to complain about when it comes to the performances, music (by Shankar-Ehsaan Loy), stunt sequences, and cinematography (by Anend C Chandran). The primary issue lies in the coherence of the screenplay. It works exceptionally well in certain areas, such as the build-up to the tournament and the evolution of the people involved.

Where the film falters is in the storyline involving Arjun Ashokan’s Savio and Roshan Mathew’s Vetri. There are a few scenes that successfully convey the depth of their bond, but there is a noticeable lack of emotional weight in the latter half of the film. The audience never truly get to see Vetri as a complete person—only brief outbursts that portray him as a petulant, depressed man with anger issues, revealing just one side of his character.

Similarly, Savio is portrayed as a man trying to raise his brother’s daughter well and keep on the right path by doing what he knows best. However, according to Vetri, Savio was not a pure do-gooder in the past. This aspect of Savio’s character is merely stated, (if you discount the introduction from when they are just children) and never shown, making it difficult to fully grasp their shared history.

This becomes a problem because it feels as though the writer has envisioned an extensive backstory filled with significant past events and emotional build-up, but much of it never translates to the screen. Towards the end, one of the villains is dragged into the arena, and honestly, it feels disconnected from how the film arrives at that conclusion.

Vishak Nair is effective as Cherian and clearly has the ability to play a convincing antagonist. Roshan Mathew has his moments, as does Arjun Ashokan. Ishan Shoukath works well as the adorable, star-struck younger brother.
And, of course, there is a major cameo. It didn’t have to be him, but it certainly serves as an added bonus.
