Retta Thala Movie Review:
When your hero recovers from gunshot wounds faster than he changes shirts, subtlety has clearly left the building. Arun Vijay plays dual roles here: Kaali, a broke Pondicherry orphan with chronic headaches, and Malpe Upendra, a Goa mobster serving parole for murder. After they cross paths, Kaali and his girlfriend Andrée (Siddhi Idnani) kill Upendra in a scuffle and decide to steal his wealth by assuming his identity. Corrupt cop Thiraviyam (John Vijay) and Upendra’s enemies soon conspire to put that to an end.
The film spends massive chunks explaining backstories rather than letting anything unfold organically. You get Kaali’s past in Pondicherry, Upendra’s crimes in Goa, all delivered in choppy flashbacks that stop the momentum cold. Characters don’t develop through dialogue or behavior. They just get shoved from one situation to the next (and why the multiple languages?). Kaali effortlessly beats waves of attackers. Andrée survives a serious stabbing and hobbles away like it’s nothing. The stakes feel non-existent because the outcomes are never in doubt.
John Vijay’s nosy, motor-mouthed cop act has curdled into self-parody at this point. His character exists to annoy, not in a good way. Tanya Ravichandran is barely around. Hareesh Peradi’s mob boss crew gets played so broadly you can’t take any of them seriously. A late twist about Kaali’s real identity tries to add intrigue but lands with a thud.
Arun Vijay commits to both roles, staying lean and intense throughout. The script just doesn’t give him space beyond standard action hero moves. Siddhi Idnani provides motivation for his choices before becoming furniture. Sam CS’s score is acceptable, though it could have been dialed back.
Production values offer some polish. Locations vary, visuals have slickness, runtime stays under two hours. What’s missing is flow. Scenes don’t connect, they just happen in sequence. The film never finds a rhythm where you can settle in and believe what’s happening. You finish asking what the point was. Intrigue? Character work? None of it comes through. Just generic masala mechanics grinding along without spark.
