Movie Review:

A lively film that blends mass and meaning

Dude Movie Synopsis:

Agan and Kural are first cousins and practically grew up together. What happens when one of them begins to develop feelings for the other?

Dude Movie Review:

Debutant Keerthiswaran’s Dude is a rare mainstream hero-elevation film which addresses a relevant real-world issue convincingly. The film tackles the subject with humour but without being insensitive about it. That’s one of the many perks of this fast-paced film. It also benefits from sharp editing. The film is cut in a way to not make you feel any lag, as there’s always something or other happening on screen to keep you hooked.

Dude finds the right balance between mass and meaning, like very few commercial outings in recent years have. In his Tamil feature film debut, Sai Abhyankkar perfectly gets Keerthiswaran’s vision and wonderfully conveys that through his music.

But even when the film has many pro-woman dialogues, Dude isn’t as feministic or progressive as it thinks itself to be. What’s hard to imagine is that a filmmaker who can address such a hard-hitting issue didn’t even, for a second, think that there’s something wrong with the central love track between first cousins. Even though Pradeep Ranganathan (Agan) and Mamitha Baiju (Kural) have good chemistry, their characters are first cousins in the film. Even when they are about to get married, not even a single person around them bats an eye. Even the film tries to pass them off as friends to lessen the damage. It’s sad to see a mainstream movie in 2025 still push such a redundant trope.

Pradeep’s Agan might have been presented as a cool guy leading up to the film’s release. But luck isn’t in his favour as far as romantic relationships are concerned. Maybe, to make up for that, the film positions him as the saviour/good guy who goes out of his way to help others. While Pradeep walks away with the more sympathetic role, the writing makes Mamitha’s character Kural unintentionally cold-hearted and maybe even clueless.

Sarath Kumar, who plays Mamitha’s father and Pradeep’s uncle, clearly shines in a dynamic role that gives him a chance to flex his range. The supporting cast are solid and so are the leads. Pradeep brings in his trademark boy-next-door charm in the film. It’s commendable how the actor always manages to find a new dimension to being the boy next door with each of his new films. Mamitha is terrific. The actress has dubbed for herself and it has added a sense of authenticity to her character.

Dude is a confident debut film. Even though it may not get a lot of things right, the film makes you curious about what its director is going to make next.
