Movie Review:

Story:

A misadventure deep in the forest leads small-time reporter Alok Goyal (Ayushmann Khurrana) to a mysterious girl, Tadaka (Rashmika Mandanna), and her mythical world of betaals (demihumans). When Alok is captured and offered as a sacrifice to the betaals’ rogue leader, Yakshashan (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), Tadaka breaks the tribe’s rules to save him. What follows is a clash between two opposing worlds that changes Alok’s destiny as he learns to embrace his darker side to stop an ancient threat.

Review:

The Stree universe continues to grow—with new lore, new beings, and an even bigger canvas, and director Aditya Sarpotdar’s latest outing stands as a worthy addition. The betaals—once guardians of humans—follow strict rules: never kill humans or drink their blood (deemed poisonous after witnessing people slaughter each other during Partition), never fall in love with them, and never cross into civilisation. But Tadaka’s defiance upends the fragile balance, unleashing the formidable Yakshashan.

Thamma carries all the trademarks of the franchise—stellar VFX, engaging storytelling, and a perfect balance of horror and humour. The visual design is a standout; the dense forests, eerie caves, and Yakshashan’s spectral form are stunningly created. The first half breezes by with Alok’s awkward affection for Tadaka and her foray into city life. The narrative gradually deepens, revealing the betaals’ origins and the conflict at the heart of their existence. Though the pacing remains tight, a few segments feel stretched—particularly a detour where a betaal-turned-cop (Faisal Malik) takes Alok to a vampire nightclub and offers him Alexander the Great’s blood.

Saurabh Goswami’s cinematography masterfully captures both the haunting wilderness and the face-offs between characters. With nods to its predecessors — like Yakshashan saying of Tadaka, “Woh stree hai, woh kuch bhi kar sakti hai” — and a funny cameo by Jana (Abhishek Banerjee), everything fits seamlessly without feeling forced. Sachin-Jigar deliver an excellent soundtrack, with the melodious Tum Mere Na Hue and Rahein Na Rahein Hum, alongside the club banger Dilbar Ki Aankhon Ka.

Ayushmann Khurrana is in fine form, delivering a sharp comic performance that evolves seamlessly into a darker, more intense turn. Rashmika Mandanna charms as Tadaka, blending innocence with strength, while Nawazuddin Siddiqui adds gravitas and menace in equal measure. The supporting cast, including Faisal Malik and Paresh Rawal, add solid depth.

Thamma ends on a thrilling note, teasing the next chapter of the horror-comedy universe. With its engaging humour, strong performances, slick visuals, and inventive VFX, it’s a thoroughly entertaining watch—and one that keeps the Stree universe alive and kicking.
