Warfare: Movie Overview
Warfare is an upcoming war film written and directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland. Based on Mendoza’s experiences during the Iraq War as a former U.S. Navy SEAL, the film follows in real-time a platoon of Navy SEALs on a mission through insurgent territory in 2006. It stars an ensemble cast that includes D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Mendoza alongside Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henrique Zaga, Joseph Quinn, and Charles Melton. The film will be released by A24 in 2025.
In February 2024, it was announced that A24 was developing a war film with Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland set attached, which would follow Garland’s film Civil War, for which Mendoza was the military supervisor. The duo wrote the script and planned to direct the film together. At the time of the announcement, Charles Melton was in negotiations to star in the film. Joseph Quinn was being considered for the cast as well. D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai was cast in the film to portray Mendoza himself in March 2024, when the title was confirmed to be Warfare, with Kit Connor, Cosmo Jarvis, Will Poulter, and Finn Bennett being added to the cast as well. That same month, Garland announced his intentions to step back from directing films and focus on writing, while announcing that his directional role in Warfare would be more of a supporting role to Mendoza’s. In April 2024, Noah Centineo, Taylor John Smith, Adain Bradley, Michael Gandolfini, Henry Zaga, and Evan Holtzman joined the cast.
Principal photography began in May 2024 in London.
Warfare is scheduled to be released by A24 in the United States in 2025.

Movie Review:
Story: Co-directed by Alex Garland and Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, Warfare is a nail-biting, jaw-dropping tense portrayal of modern combat and evacuation. The film is based on an actual incident from the Iraq War and memories of Mendoza and his fellow U.S. Navy SEALs, who were trapped in a Ramadi apartment during a surveillance mission gone awry in 2006.
Review: After Adolescence’s single take technical brilliance, Warfare’s impeccable sound design, intense storytelling, cinematography and atmospherics will leave you shaken. There is no music, the enemies are barely shown and the entire film is shot at one location. This no-frills innovative approach creates a film so immersive, terrifying and gripping that you want to be evacuated, let alone have popcorn or coffee!
Alex Garland’s spectacular war movie can be classified as horror for its edge of the seat, relentless and raw onslaught of terror. He leaves you no room to relax or catch a breath. It strips off the glamour and chest-thumping heroism of war films to give you the real picture. There’s also brotherhood and empathy, surfacing when there’s no expectation. Warfare is a technical masterpiece that never overlooks human emotion and horrors of war. This one’s bound to blow your mind.
Should you watch it? Hell yes! in IMAX. This is one of the greatest war films. Do note it’s a graphic depiction of war and risk involved in combat so not for the fainthearted. Cinemas should screen this without an interval.
