Kitty Party Movie Review:
When Kitty Party was announced last year, we found out there will be five lead actresses in it. The news made everyone hopeful that it would be a female-oriented movie with some amount of experimentation, which meant a changing tide in the Punjabi industry. Nav Bajwa said it’s a comedy-drama presenting a funny take on the middle class housewives. For all those who speculated it to be something new and different, sorry to say but you will be highly disappointed. Yes, you read it right.
This story of a con woman, named Jasmin (Kainaat Arora), who fools a number of people, including five ladies played by Upasna Singh, Anita Devgan, Neelu Kohli, Mani Boparai and Satwant Kaur. These five women know each other from a kitty and develop a bond of friendship over daily activities. They are simple and homely. So, when a woman promises them to double their money in a few days, they all get swooned by it and agree to invest their husbands’ hard-earned money (in lakhs). Next thing you know, the con woman disappears with their money. Now, these five women forge a plan to take revenge on Jasmin. They convince their husbands, played by Gurpreet Ghuggi, Jaswinder Bhalla and Harby Sangha (named in no particular order), to let them go on a spiritual trip and land in Goa where the con woman lives.
All this may really be sounding like an interesting plot but when you see it playing on the big screen, you wonder who is being made stupid, those five women or the audience. You neither relate with any character nor feel convinced with their simplicity. Overacting, silly dialogues, poor direction and a weak screenplay, this is all that you see hitherto.
Unfortunately, nothing changes after the interval. The first cabbie they meet at the airport turns out to be their acquaintance. And that’s our hero-the actor-director Nav Bajwa. Their stay and food is arranged, they have a guy driving them around Goa. He finds them a mafia guy (Rana Ranbir), who takes it upon him to help the women. Everything is so simple and sorted. From somewhere, their husbands also decide to go on a holiday to Goa. They all form a team, the crew of a film precisely, fool the con woman into becoming the lead actress of their film and pay them in return. And, mission accomplished!
Well, if you have the patience to sit through till this point, you’ll actually be wondering whether it’s with the same insincerity with which they shoot the few scenes in the film (in their effort to befool Jasmin) is Kitty Party made or did they really go wrong in a sincere effort.
