Organizers of the inaugural Wildwood St. Patrick's Day Block Party created a 1,805-pound meat and potato pie - setting the world record for the largest meat and potato pie, while raising funds for a local nonprofit group that helps stages after-prom events at Wildwood High School.
The Guinness world record for the most people in a custard pie fight was 684 participants from the Drake University (USA), and was held at the Olmsted Student Center Parking lot in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest mince pie recorded, set by a 1.02 tonnes (2,260 lb) pie, baked at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, UK.
The Press of Atlantic City reports portions of the pie were cooked in several restaurants' kitchens over the course of several hours.
The completed 'cottage pie' weighed-in at close to two tons, 1,805 lbs total weight made up from 880 lbs minced beef (not lamb), 775 lbs potatoes, 110 lbs carrots, 100 lbs onions, 72 lbs butter, 65 lbs wine, 15 gallons of cream and assorted herbs and spices.
According to 'The Morning Star', "...Health and safety nazis from the fire department put a dampener on proceedings by insisting the team of cooks couldn't use blowtorches to crisp the potato topping."
Eventually, a Guinness World Records official on hand to certify the record determined it was edible.
Organizers initially sought to set the record for the largest shepherd's pie. But the official rejected that because they used beef, and shepherd's pie is made of lamb.
The event raised funds for a local nonprofit group that helps stages after-prom events at Wildwood High School.
