Theta Tau, a nationwide, professional engineering fraternity, partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank to distribute peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to various service organizations in the Riverside area; in only 43 minutes, the group of about 90 students made 1,686 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches - setting the new world record for the Most sandwiches made in one hour.

The Guinness world record for the Most sandwiches made in one hour is 1,500.

Guinness World Records also recognized the largest sandwich: it weighed 5,440 lb (2,467.5 kg) and was made by Wild Woody's Chill and Grill, Roseville, Michigan, USA.

"We definitely beat the world record," said Jun Wang, director of student development and international studies for the College of Engineering. "We not only beat it, but we surpassed it in less than an hour."

The students lined up along tables near UCR's bell tower and formed assembly lines to make the sandwiches and package them into boxes. The boxes were then taken to Second Harvest Food Bank and refrigerated until pick-up.

Second Harvest Food Bank will distribute the sandwiches, free of charge, to various local service organizations, such as the Salvation Army, Manna House, Calvary Presbyterian Church, Operation Safehouse, and others.

Catherine Ferguson, director of donor relations at Second Harvest, said she was excited to partner with a campus organization, and grateful for the large donation of food.

"These students are really a pleasure to work with," she said. "And most of them are engineering majors, so they're very well organized. I don't have to worry so much about food being wasted or not packaged correctly."
