Wilson Middle School student Matthew Walak, 11, and his friends, David Kelly, Daniel Kotlyar and Casey Barrasso, detonated a contraption of 3,991 interwoven popsicle sticks - setting the new world record for the Largest stick bomb.
The Guinness world record for the largest stick bomb was set by Tim Fort (USA), who created a stick bomb using 3,864 tongue depressors. It was 'detonated' at the Science Museum of Minnesota, in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the fastest mile in a bomb disposal suit: 10 min 16 sec, set by LT. Jonathan Kehoe (USA) at Camp ECHO in Diwaniyah Provence Iraq.
Matthew Walak said a Natick Police officer and the entire girls basketball team also came to watch the stick bomb detonation.
"It just feels awesome," he said.
According to the MetroWest Daily News:
"Each team member worked on a different section of the stick bomb, and Walak's dad, Steve, supervised to project."
The boys spent most of the day hunched over on the stage, gingerly weaving together the 8,000 sticks and listening to the radio. |
