Christine McCallum, 60, of Bakewell, has grown a giant pineapple, measuring 32 centimetres long and weighing 8.28 kilograms - which sets the new world record for the Heaviest pineapple.

The Guinness world record for the heaviest pineapple was set by a pineapple weighing 8.06 kg (17 lb 12 oz), grown by E. Kamuk of Ais Village, West New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the heaviest mango; it weighed 3.435 kg (7.57 lb) and was presented by Sergio and Maria Socorro Bodiongan (Philippines) at the Sundayag Celebration's Pinaka Contest in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines.

Christine McCallum planted the monster fruit two and a half years ago, using nothing but water to feed it.

It was picked few days ago, weighing 8.2 kilograms and measuring 32 centimetres long; it has a girth of 66cms.

"It makes the normal-sized one look like a little baby," gardener Christine McCallum said.

The grandmother from Palmerston, who has grown pineapples for years to keep dogs and her grandchildren off the garden, said the massive fruit didn't produce any offshoots, known as pups, so she wouldn't be able to breed it.

But she has been keeping a watch on the fruit that spawned it, which is still in the ground.

"I am just going to leave it there and see if I get another one off it next year," she said.

It appears the fate of the celebrity pineapple rests during the climax of the 2011 festive season when it becomes part of the Christmas Day feast.

"I think we'll put it in the centre of the table and put a Christmas hat on it with some eyes and a moustache," Palmerston's green-thumb gardener said.
