USA sets world record: World’s first passenger drone

Las Vegas, Nevada, USA – November 23, 2016 – The Ehang 184 Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (AAV) is a single-passenger drone that transports people at 11,000 feet; it is a 142-horsepower “personal flying vehicle” that can transport a single human being from Point A to Point B at an altitude of more than 11,000 feet, thus setting the world record for being the World’s first passenger drone.

The Ehang 184 can carry a passenger weighing up to 264 pounds, and can reach a maximum flying altitude of 11,480 feet. The drone can reportedly be controlled entirely through a mobile app.

The Guinness World Records world record for the largest single objects to be transported by air are the 37.23 m. (122.17 feet) NASA space shuttles, which are “piggy-backed” on top of modified Boeing 747 jets from alternative landing strips back to Florida’s Cape Canaveral.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest bus mosaic; it consisted of 156 buses and was achieved by Department of Transport (UAE), in Abu Dhabi, UAE, on 18 November 2014.

As the company says in its marketing copy, the Ehang 184 aims to provide a “short- to medium-distance transportation solution” and is designed for “average consumers who may have very little experience with piloting any flying objects.”

The company based in the Guangzhou province of southern China, already makes camera and hobbyist drones, but its passenger drone is the first of its kind.

The Ehang 184 has a span of 18 feet when fully unfolded, weighs 440 lbs, and can carry a passenger weighing up to 264 pounds. Its maximum flying altitude is 11,480 feet, and the AAV can fly for as long as 23 minutes at sea level.

The main structure is made of a composite material, along with carbon fiber and epoxy. In the cabin, there’s one seat, one control pad, air conditioning, and a reading light.

On the outside, there are lights on each of the four propeller arms (red at the front, green at the back), flashing airline signal lights, a downward-facing video camera, and a headlight.

EHang 184, the world’s first passenger drone, capable of autonomously carrying a person in the air for 23 minutes, has been cleared for testing. The approval was given out by the Nevada governor’s office to develop and test the vehicle at the state’s Federal Aviation Administration-approved drone test site.

The electric EHang 184 passenger drone by Chinese firm EHang was unveiled at CES in Las Vegas in January.
