USA breaks Guinness World record: Most tomatoes harvested from one plant

Orlando, Florida, USA – November 8, 2016 – A total of 32,194 tomatoes were harvested from the massive “tomato tree” growing inside the Walt Disney World Resort’s experimental greenhouses in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, which is a new world record for the Most tomatoes harvested from a single plant in one year.

The Guinness World Records world record for the Most tomatoes from a single stem/truss was set by Graham Tranter of Bridgnorth in Shropshire, UK, who grew a single tomato stem (or “truss”) that yielded a record 488 tomatoes when counted during the October 2010 harvest.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest display of tomato varieties; it numbers 132, achieved by Lycored (USA) in Times Square, New York, New York, USA, on 13 October 2015.

With a harvest of more than 32,000 tomatoes and a total weight of 1,151.84 pounds (522 kg), the massive “tomato tree” growing inside the Walt Disney World Resort’s experimental greenhouses in Lake Buena Vista, Florida sets a new world record for the Most tomatoes harvested from a single plant.

Yong Huang, Epcot’s manager of agricultural science discovered the unique plant in Beijing, China.

Huang brought its seeds to Epcot and created the specialized greenhouse for the fruit to grow.

Heirloom Tomato trees apparently take 1.2 – 1.5 years to reach their impressive size. They yield no fruit during the first 7 – 8 months, but once they reach maturity, you can expect a harvest of over 14,000 tomatoes on average.

The vine grows golf ball-sized tomatoes which are served at Walt Disney World restaurants.

The world record-setting tomato tree can be seen by guests along the Living With the Land boat ride at Epcot.
