Surprises in Store: Humorous Christmas Story For Children

James, Sultan, Kartar, Murli and Reena were in deep conversation about Christmas and gifts.. Little did they know that someone was taking down notes…

On a chilly December night five children — James, Sultan, Kartar, Murli and Reena, were fighting off the menacing cold. They sat around a bonfire outside their small huts.

Kartar said, “While I was selling balloons in the market, I heard people talking about Christmas. They said it was close.”

“What is this Christmas?” asked Reena.

James said, “Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus. Santa Claus, is an old man with a white flowing beard and gives gifts to children that night.”

“But why would an old man distribute gifts without reason?” asked Murli.

“Because he loves children and likes to make them happy. Do you know he comes from a far away land. Land of ice and snow. Dressed in red, he travels in a wooden carriage pulled by deer. His carriage is laden with gifts.”

Reena said, “I think all his gifts seem to be exclusively reserved for affluent children.”

Mr. Sharma and his 12-year-old son Amit, sitting in a car nearby overheard this conversation.

Reena said, “I wish Santa comes to me. I will definitely ask for a new frock. Preferably a red one. This old one will not even mop a floor properly.”

“I sell balloons with wet feet. I need a pair of slippers to prevent sores,” said Kartar.

Sultan said, “I have not tasted sweets in long time.”

James wished he had nice clothes he could wear to church, while Murli said he wanted a bicycle so that he could distribute newspaper in the morning.

Gifts Galore

On Christmas Eve, and Amit looked at the clothes, slippers and bicycle and wondered how they could be so important for someone. He dressed up in his red suit and a filled his red bag with gifts.

Amit and his father went to the spot where they had heard the children talking. They were gathered around the fire. Amit got down from the car.

“Red robe, white beard! It’s Santa for sure,” said James. The children surrounded Amit.

Reena asked, “Do you have gifts for us?”

“Yes, one for everyone” said Amit.

“Here is your frock. And your slippers. Your white coat and shoes. Your cycle is kept in my carriage. And hot jalebis and gulab jamuns for Sultan are here in this packet,” Amit distributed the gifts.

Amit told James, “Come on, get ready, we will go to church.”

Reena asked, “Who is driving the car? Your reindeer?”

Amit and his dad laughed at this innocent question.

“Merry Christmas!” His father said and turned the car towards the church.
