What do muslims do in month of Muharram?

The month of Muharram is also associated with many auspicious events in Islamic history. Allah is supposed to have created the heavens and the earth on this blessed day. On this day He give His infinite blessings and bounties to many of His Prophets and delivered them from the clutches of their enemies.

Allah created Hazrat Adam in this month and pardoned him of his mistake. Hazrat Noah’s Ark landed successfully on Mount Judi, Turkey during this time centuries ago. God is also said to have saved Hazrat Ibrahim from fire and rescued Hazrat Musa from the Pharaoh during the month of Muharram.

You must be wondering what there is to mourn about then? The tenth day of Muharram or Ashura is of supreme importance for Shia Muslims as they celebrate the death anniversary of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

सन् 60 हिजरी में कर्बला (सीरिया) के गवर्नर यजीद ने खुद को खलीफा घोषित किया। वहां यजीद इस्लाम का शहंशाह बनाना चाहता था। उसने लोगों को डराना शुरू कर दिया। लोगों पर कई अत्याचार किये जाने लगे, लेकिन हजरत मुहम्मद के वारिस और उनके कुछ साथियों ने यजीद के सामने अपने घुटने नहीं टेके और जमकर मुकाबला किया। अपने बीवी बच्चों की सलामती के लिए इमाम हुसैन मदीना से इराक की तरफ जा रहे थे तभी रास्ते में यजीद ने उन पर हमला कर दिया। उनके पास 72 लोग थे और यजीद के पास 8000 से अधिक सैनिक थे लेकिन फिर भी उन्होेंने यजीद की फौज के दांत खट्टे कर दिये थे। हालांकि वे इस युद्ध में जीत नहीं सके और काफी शहीद हो गए। इमाम हुसैन लड़ाई में बच गए। इमाम हुसैन ने अपने साथियों को कब्र में दफ्न किया। मुहर्रम के दसवें दिन जब इमाम हुसैन नमाज अदा कर रहे थे, तब यजीद ने धोखे से उन्हें भी मरवा दिया। उस दिन से मुहर्रम को इमाम हुसैन और उनके साथियों की शहादत के रूप में मनाया जाता है।
