Hanukkah or the “Festival of Lights” is an annual Jewish festival that is observed for a period of 8 days and is celebrated to commemorate the rededication of the Holy Temple of Jews, in Jerusalem. The festival starts on the 25th day of the month of Kislev, in accordance with the Hebrew calendar (from late November to late December in accordance with the Gregorian calendar). The entire festival is celebrated amidst rituals and customs and there is the lighting of a special nine-branched candelabrum, called the Hanukiah or the Menorah, as well. ‘The Borrowed Hanukkah Latkes’, written by Linda Glaser, is a fun Hanukah picture book for children. The credit for the awesome artwork goes to Nancy Cote. The story of the book revolves around Rachel, whose family prepares feast for the celebration of Hanukkah. They invite their dear elderly neighbor Mrs. Greenberg to join them over the dinner, but she is always stubborn and refuses them. However, this time, little Rachel determines that she will make Mrs. Greenberg come to their house for the holiday celebration. She comes up with the idea of borrowing potatoes from Mrs. Greenberg for preparing latkes. She then moves out of her house to see if her plan works or not. How Rachel convinces Mrs. Greenberg forms the rest of the plot.

‘The Borrowed Hanukkah Latkes’ is a great Hanukkah book, especially fore children. To enliven this already lively and spirited holiday story, the popular cartoonist Nancy Cote has provided beautiful cartoon illustrations. The book received enormous critical acclaim and was even awarded the 1997 Notable Books for Children, Smithsonian Magazine and the 1998-1999 Florida Reading Association Children’s Book Award. The way in which the author has presented the book, in accordance with the perspective of a child, is really noteworthy. According to reviews, the book is regarded as a well-illustrated, well-told holiday story, with a lovely message wrapped in it.
