Making A Bird Table

Many boys take a great interest in birds, and their especial delight is to see that those visit their gardens in winter are properly fed. To throw food on the ground for them is a kindly act; nevertheless, it often proves to be dangerous, as cats get to know where birds are likely to congregate. Pussy secretes himself behind some obstacle and, when a number of our feathered friends are eating the crumbs we have provided, pounces upon them, with disastrous consequences.

A bird, table, however, makes bird feeding absolutely safe. The table consists of a flat piece of wood about a foot square, screwed to the top of a 6 foot pole. The screws are reinforced by a couple of brackets fixed to the pole and to the underside of the flat top. The foot of the pole is driven into the ground, the position chosen being such that no cat can jump off a low roof, a wall or an overhanging branch on to the table.

Suitable food for the table consists of crumbs, pieces of fat, and many kinds of cereals, but cocoa-nut is considered harmful. Do not forget a saucerful of warm water in frosty weather.
