One of the newer reserves under the Project Tiger, Pench has been in the news recently as in literally "raining Tiger cubs"! In the month of June, the park has been fortunate in three tigresses giving birth to as many as ten cubs...TOI.
Pench National Park is spread over an area of 752 sq kms and is situated in the Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh. The park derives its name from the river Pench which runs through the park and provides stunningly large water bodies as good watering holes for the diverse wild life. The vast expanse of pastures and meadows along the river is a good breeding ground. You can catch herds of Cheetal, Sambar, Wild Boar, Gaur in these meadows. Both the prey and the predator are spotted here.
The park is dominated by hills, forests and valleys. Kala Pahar hill as the highest feature in the park, reaches 650mts above sea level. The parks forest is made up of typical stretches of deciduous trees such as teak and many tracts of bamboo. The tree species of Mahua, Tendu, Bija, amaltas, teak, arjun and palash are in abundance. The numerous range of shrubs and climbers provide a rich color mix to the dryness in the summer month.
Pench is home to a variety of wild life and more famously for the Royal Bengal Tiger. But, leopard sightings in this park are stated to be amongst the best in India. Other predators in the park are Dhole (Indian Wild Dog), Wolf, Hyena, Jackal, and the Jungle Cat.
As you drive through the park you are likely to chance upon herds of prey such as cheetal, sambher, gaur, langur, muntjac and Rhesus Macaques.
The park is brilliant in its bird life and home to more than 300 species of birds including Orioles, Wagtails, White eyed buzzard, Horn bills, Kingfisher, Barbets, Minivets, the crested serpent eagle, crested hawk eagle and a host of Raptors.
The National Park has international recognition from the classic tales in Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book".
