The Marathon is a long, gruelling race which traditionally closes the Olympic events. It is taken from the amazing achievement of the Greek runner Pheidippides, who ran over twenty-six miles in four hours, taking news to Athens of the Persians' defeat at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC.
