Less than a week after a Ghaziabad panchayat decided to punish a rapist by five shoe whacks, the panchayat of a village in Greater Noida ordered to gouge out the eyes of a couple and then shoot them in public.

The panchayat of Ghori Bachera under Dadri police station passed the ‘ judgment’ on Tuesday against Javed and Sashista, who eloped and got married on February 13.

Javed is the nephew of a local BSP leader, Mehndi Hasan. Villagers said Hasan had been helping the couple. “ They had eloped and got married against the wishes of their parents,” said Abid Mohammad, a villager.

“ Their act has brought shame to the entire village.

They deserve severe punishment so that such acts are not repeated in future,” said Hari Om Singh, another villager.

After getting married, the couple returned on February 24 and started staying in Dadri. Enraged by their defiance, the panchayat ordered their eyes to be gouged out before shooting them and Hasan.

The couple then appeared before Dadri’s sub- divisional magistrate and sought police protection.

When Hasan returned to the village with policemen, the villagers pelted stones at them. An FIR was registered against 17 people.

After the police’s intervention, a mahapanchayat was held on Friday which confessed to have passed a “ wrong judgment” on Tuesday.

R. K. Saini, in- charge, Dadri police station, said, “ The boy and girl had mutually consented to marriage. They are now living under protection.” Greater Noida’s SP Surendra Verma was not available for comments.
