Police in Rotenburg, Germany, were caught on the hop - when a kangaroo caused chaos on the roads after escaping from a travelling circus.

The roo - called Norbert - brought traffic to a standstill as he bounded between cars during the town's rush hour.

"We thought we had him cornered and then he jumped right over a car and he was off down the pavement like the wind," said one officer.

Meanwhile, circus trainers had discovered Norbert's empty enclosure and helped police and wildlife experts to trap him in a supermarket car park.

"He's now very calm and happy again and none the worse for his day out," said a circus spokesman.
