Mumbaikars looking forward to an entertaining ‘Independence weekend’ will miss two big releases this week ‘Kaminey’ and ‘Life Partner’ following the Maharashtra government’s announcement that all cinemas will remain shut till Saturday.
Both films were slated to be running in 100 screens across the city from Friday. Trade analyst Amod Mehra said, ‘‘The industry is staring at a loss of nothing less than Rs 3 to Rs 5 crore this weekend.’’ The film industry is still reeling from the Rs 350 crore loss it incurred during the recent two-month standoff between multiplex owners and producers and distributors over revenue sharing.
Sidharth Roy Kapur of UTV, which produced ‘Kaminey’, is not overtly worried. ‘‘Kaminey has generated a lot of curiosity and people will come to theaters when it is released. Besides, there is no big release till September 18, so the film will have a good run.’’
There are no plans in the offing to cancel the nationwide release of the film, despite fears of piracy eating into the profits.
Indian Film Company, which made ‘Life Partner’, is going ahead with the nationwide release of the film with the exception of Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Navi Mumbai. Sandeep Bhargava of Indian Film Company said, ‘‘There is no way we can postpone the release. Mumbai contributes 20% of the box office revenue of any film.’’
The premiere of Marathi film ‘Chhava’ has been canceled. It will now be released only on Sunday.
Bollywood events have taken a nosedive in the wake of the pandemic. At the music launch of the comedy ‘Quick gun Murugan’ on Wednesday, guests were given masks at the entrance of the venue. Even lead actors had to make a masked appearance.
The cast and crew of ‘Life Partner’ will be skipping Pune, which was initially on its promotional tour list. Another event based on the Salman Khan-starrer ‘Wanted’ scheduled for Thursday has been postponed.
Producer Vashu Bhagnani, however, remains fearless in these troubled times. His entire unit, including actors Sushmita Sen and Ritesh Deshmukh, will be traveling to London for the music launch of his film ‘Do Knot Disturb’.
