Abdul Raza - a road-roller driver of the state Public Works Department - was found in a semi-conscious state at Chajjubagh here on Tuesday morning.

“The Khajekalan police informed his family members at home that Raza was dead and his body can be collected from the post-mortem room in Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH). The news immediately had the family members wailing,” said Hameed Intiaz, a relative.

Hameed recalled that he rushed to the Gandhi Maidan police station where he was told that Raza’s body was in the post-mortem room. “When we reached there, a constable told us that he (Raza) was actually alive and admitted into the emergency ward,” he said criticising the police for declaring Raza dead even before properly examining him.

Raza’s relatives complained that after receiving the “tragic” news, they telephoned all their relatives to come to Patna for the burial. “We cannot stop them now. They are on their way,” said another relative. Raza’s family said that he had withdrawn money from his bank account on Monday evening and was missing ever since.

Gandhi Maidan police station denies any goof-up. “Our policemen recovered him from Chajjubagh and even collected information on the location of his house. He was registered in PMCH before he slipped into a semi-conscious state,” said a police officer.

It is suspected that the goof-up took place in conveying the message to Khajekalam police station.
