Kolkata-based poet Sharmila Ray recently released Living Other Lives, a bouquet of poems, at the Emami Landmark Store. This is Ray's fourth compilation. M. F. Husain, who's has done the cover of the book, sent her a message on that special evening: "I liked her poems and have found her a sensitive poet." The best compliment came from Zacharay Harkenrider, deputy director of the American Center, who was the special guest: "I thought Sharmila Ray is a senior poet. However I find her to be a young and beautiful one with a lot of promise. Poetry is my best friend it was a part of me when I was growing up and has stayed with me since. When I was studying at Pratt Memorial, we'd be asked to rhyme verses and the best ones would be put up on the board. I simply loved the concept. I had been writing all the while and also liked painting. When my first book, Earth, Me And You, came out in 1995, everything crystallized and that was when I became focused about poetry. Being a poet who writes in English in Calcutta those days meant that getting a publisher was difficult. But now things have changed for the better. Writing in English was a very spontaneous decision. My second book, A Day With Rini (1998), is the story of a woman who talks to herself about her innermost feelings. My next book, Down Saltwater (1999), was a collection of poems which again deals with a woman and her interaction with mundane life. Being a woman, I find it easier to write from a woman's perspective. One of my most memorable moments happened during the publishing of my fourth book, Living Other Lives (2004). I had thought of contacting Jogen Chaudhuri, but one of my friends said, 'Why not Maqbool Fida Husain?' I got his number and called him up. I was so excited I felt like a schoolgirl. I said, 'I write poems, that too in English. Would you do the cover for me if you like my poems?' Husain asked me to send them across. He got back after two months and agreed to do the cover. Drawing inspiration from the prosaic traits of life, Ray got glued to poetic veins from her family only. Having groomed in a literary ambience that forges connection with her paternal uncle-cum-Sahitya Akademi winner Monindro Ray besides her educationist parents, Ray's repertoire confirms a well versed academic background and indepth knowledge in literature. "My upbringing happened in an environment that nurtured my poetic interests, shares.the perceptive lady. Having studied at Pratt Memorial School this Presidency College graduate pursued her Masters in History from Calcutta University. Currently a City College professor in the Arts Faculty, Ray has already three volumes of poetry to her credit. The works are namely Earth, Me and You, A Day with Rini. and Down Saltwater. Talking about different influences this voracious reader accredits her close perusal of copious prose and poetry apart from the very essence of interpersonal communication, the exotic and the mundane niches of life to exert a strong impact upon one's perception.

Compiling around 100 poems, her recently launched anthological piece. Living Other Lives navigates myriad journeys about desires and togetherness. Having been an editor of repute, Ray edited a journal on art, poetry and short stories, columns on creative writing in leading dailies and participated-in umpteen poetry readings.

A board member (English) of Sahitya Akademi Ray is presently composing short stories. Sharmila plans to assemble an eclectic edition on the tales. Besides poetry, Sharmila enjoys painting and traveling. And her artist hubby inspires her senses with his palette and brush strokes on painted canvas.
