Heart and Soul is the thirteenth studio album by Kenny G, which was released on June 29, 2010. Kenny and renowned studio master Walter Afanasieff (Christina Aguilera, Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mika, Barbra Streisand) produced and arranged the album.
In the world of popular music, most of the major stars tend to be vocalists. Instrument players who make the headlines are generally members of well-known bands. It is very rare to see an artiste who plays a single instrument be famous on his own. Kenneth Bruce Gorelick, better known to the world as Kenny G, is one of this rare breed. Considered to be the highest selling instrumental musician of recent years, the man can be credited for making saxophone driven music mainstream and yanking it out of the niche jazz/classical category. Purists might scoff at his work and call it “pleasant background music” (and to be fair, it does tend to be heard often in showrooms and restaurants) but millions of Kenny G fans could not care less. Awardwinning record producer and songwriter Walter Afanasieff, best known for his work with Mariah Carey and for Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On, shares the production reins in Heart and Soul, Kenny G’s thirteenth studio album. But if you were thinking that this would mark a departure in Kenny’s normally middle-path style of music, think again. From the moment the opening chords of the title track kick in, you know you are going to be listening to a typical Kenny G work, with the saxophone establishing a central melody, meandering off to a few corners and then returning to base. And in best Kenny G tradition, a few celebrity vocalists step in to add lyrics to his music — in this case Robin Thicke and Babyface. It is pleasant, very easy on the ear and proves that Kenny G has not lost his touch to sound soothing without really rocking your world. Which is not really a bad thing, if one is a Kenny G fan, or if one is just looking for some music to play in a party where talking is a lot more important than dancing. Some will criticise Kenny G for not daring to experiment, we will merely put the record on and soak in the music. There is something to be said to be sticking to the tried and tested path.
