Spies in Disguise Movie Review:
If it’s a Will Smith movie, even if he turns small and animated, you don’t get any less of him. ‘Spies In Disguise’ is an animated spy adventure that turns its hero into a common pigeon, but never loses the character’s charm. Loosely inspired by Lucas Martell’s short film, ‘Pigeon: Impossible’, the film introduces us to the self-proclaimed ‘world’s greatest spy’ Lance Sterling (voiced by Smith) and his gifted sidekick Walter Beckett (voiced by Holland).
While Sterling handles critical missions with flamboyance like James Bond, Beckett is a young scientist with a knack for inventing non-violent gizmos. The two are compelled to team up when Sterling unwit tingly consumes Beckett’s experimental concoctions and turns into a pigeon. The duo embarks on an exciting mission to take down Sterl ing’s nemesis, Killian (voiced by Ben Mendelsohn) who’s into stealing Sterling’s identity and weaponizing drones.
While Smith and Holland’s pairing delivers the on-screen vibrancy you would expect, the characters are devoid of layers. Mendelsohn is delightful in the negative role as Killian. The story is generic and predictable, though it delivers a few surprises. The concept of body-swap, supported by mediocre humour, may not appeal to most adults.
‘Spies In Disguise’, however, scores high among its younger audiences. It has an appealing message on non-violence and misfits, which children could relate and benefit from. The film’s animation is visually detailed, despite the dull emphasis on the hues of blues and greys at some places. ‘Spies In Disguise’ may not serve the expectations of adults, but it’s a sweet family film for New Year’s Eve.
