John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (also known as John Wick: Chapter 3 or John Wick: Parabellum) is an upcoming American neo-noir action thriller film starring Keanu Reeves as the titular character in the third installment in the John Wick film series, following John Wick (2014) and John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017). The film is directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad, Shay Hatten, Chris Collins and Marc Abrams, based on a story by Kolstad. It also stars Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Mark Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon, Lance Reddick, Anjelica Huston and Ian McShane.
The first film was always intended to begin a franchise, and a third installment was announced in June 2017. Much of the returning cast and crew was confirmed in February 2018, with new members joining that May. Filming began that month and lasted through November, taking place in New York City, Montreal, Russia, Morocco and Spain.
The film is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on May 17, 2019, by Lionsgate.
Legendary hitman John Wick must fight his way out of New York when a $14 million contract on his life makes him the target of the world’s top assassins. Being declared as excommunicado after killing D’Antonio on Continental grounds, the chances of survival have never been thinner for Wick.
In October 2016, Chad Stahelski, who made his directorial debut with John Wick and served as Reeves’ Matrix stunt double, stated that a third film in the John Wick series was in the works, and in June 2017 it was reported that Derek Kolstad, who wrote the two prior films, would return to write the screenplay. In January 2018, it was reported that Stahelski would return to direct.
According to Reeves, the film’s title was taken from the famous 4th century Roman military quote “Si vis pacem, para bellum,” which means, “If you want peace, prepare for war.” In an interview with The New York Times, McShane also said that the film will be big, good and nothing is the same while also hinting that part of the action could be the High Table’s payback not only on Wick but also on his close friend Winston.
In January 2018, it was reported that Hiroyuki Sanada was in talks to join the cast. Later, it was revealed that Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, and Lance Reddick would reprise their roles from previous John Wick films. In May 2018, Halle Berry, Anjelica Huston, Asia Kate Dillon, Mark Dacascos, Jason Mantzoukas, Yayan Ruhian, Cecep Arif Rahman and Tiger Chen joined the cast. In November 2018, Said Taghmaoui confirmed his involvement in the film.
Filming began May 5, 2018 in New York City and Montreal, along with the additional filming locations of Russia, Morocco, and Spain. Principal photography wrapped on November 17, 2018. Cinematographer Dan Laustsen was asked about how challenging it was to use as many extended fight scene takes as possible while filming the high action screenplay. He stated, “Of course it is (a challenge), because all the fights – Chad (the director) is doing most of the fights himself. We play that as wide as we can. Because that way we see it’s him. We do that a lot, we try to play it as wide as we can and do long shots. Of course, because Chad has a background from the stunt world he knows exactly how to block this kind of stuff. I’m not the best stunt person in the world, but I’m learning.”
The visual effects are provided by Method Studios and Image Engine.
Tyler Bates & Joel J. Richard return to score the film. The soundtrack will be released at Varese Sarabande Records.
The premiere of the film is planned to take place in New York City in May 2019. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on May 17, 2019, by Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment.
In the United States and Canada, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is projected to gross around $35 million in its opening weekend.

John Wick Chapter 3 Movie Review
Stuntman-turned-director Chad Stahelski returns to direct this third edition of the hit man saga where the legendary assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is forced to fight his way out of New York when a $14 million contract on his life makes him the target of the world’s top assassins.
Every step Wick takes in New York is perilous, and we see Wick fending off a flurry of assassins each one increasingly more capable than the other. Wick has to get out of the city and in order to seek safe passage he meets with a chilly prima donna (Anjelica Huston ), who grants him his wish after branding him with his talisman.
Morrocco is no easy street either. Once there he seeks out Sophia (Halle Berry), whose daughter he had saved a decade ago, has another date with action and then sets off for the desert. This film marks Wick’s first real journey outside New York – But Wick comes back after winning his spurs and goes on a never ending rampage thereafter.
While Wick is kept busy fighting for his life, a mysterious “Adjudicator” (Asia Kate Dillon) representing the criminal cabal known as the High Table, visits his supporters and sets out punishment for their breaking the rules. Winston (Ian McShane), who runs the assassins’ hotel called The Continental, and the king of the Bowery’s bums (Laurence Fishburne) are given seven days to put their affairs while an incessant phalanx of assassins, including Zero (Mark Dacascos), a crew of Ninjas, a set of armed Europeans, a multicultural gang, including two bladesmen (Cecep Arif Rahman and Yayan Ruhian from the Raid series) religiously pursue and attack John Wick all along his route to Morocco and back.
While John Wick is not cinema at its best, it certainly is an action extravaganza designed to set off an adrenaline rush. The fight choreography is intricate, superbly designed and technically accomplished. But despite the two hour plus of masterfully executed mayhem, there’s no purchase for continued enchantment here. Reeves glazed look doesn’t help even though his athletic build and speedy movies do their bit.
It’s really difficult to believe in an undefeatable, indefatigable superhero that has no superpowers (the kind we know of) and yet comes out of every life-threatening scrape to fight another war.
The mystique may be well laid out but the mythology is not exactly convincing. This one is a well laid out killing field but the body count is so high that even the most eager fan of this franchise would find himself hard-pressed to believe.
