Blank Movie Review:
A suicide bomber loses his memory and has a bomb attached to his heart. It is up to the police officers to prevent this bomb from taking innocent lives.
Bearded men make able terrorists is a theory reinforced in this thriller about a suicide bomber grappling with temporary amnesia. The marriage of extended facial hair, grim expressions, prominent scars and radical extremism is a popular Hindi cinema myth, second only to – all terrorists are either Hanifs, Farooqs or Maqsoods.
Blank packs in every possible stereotype with the exclusion of that one righteous Muslim figure who goes on to do the right thing and even reinterprets the holy Quran – to maintain equilibrium.
The anti-terrorist squad (ATS) spins into action when a curious suicide bomber (Karan Kapadia) is discovered at a city hospital’s emergency ward, in an unconscious state. Gingerly feeling the wires jutting out of his chest, the bomb disposal expert dumb down his diagnosis – “Iska heart bomb ki battery hain. It’s a dead man switch,” he says, wiping sweat beads off his own forehead. But ATS chief Diwan (Sunny Deol) couldn’t care less. “Revive him in five minutes, I want to question him,” he grunts before dashing off.
Yes, this is one of those – where scenes unfold building up to a decisive event but the tension is compromised by overacting that reduces even the most abominable characters to caricature. In a scene, we find two terrorists with facial hair of varying length video-conferencing from their dimly-lit lairs. When one of them randomly breaks into a monologue about his devastating feats (as if making an appraisal pitch), the other hangs up abruptly. It’s straight out of Monty Python. We also have “sleeper agents” who prefer to travel in chair-car compartments, “handlers” who diligently document their work, leaving behind a paper trail and a fanatic who promises young boys a Jannat complete with trees of toffee and rivers of milk.
As a debut vehicle for the negative lead, Blank does for Kapadia what skinny jeans did for the obese. He conveys his addled character with little restraint but barely manages to stand out or elevate the film. While Deol delivers his ‘dhai kilo‘ fist and high-octane threats with much conviction, the holes in the writing surely defuse his performance. At one point, the chief terrorist mastermind here breaks into what sounds like Urdu stirred with gibberish, cumulatively conveying gobbledygook. But then again, this is a point in the film when the audience is expected to switch off.
Writer-director Behzad Khambata seems to have a healthy appetite for police procedurals and is aware of the basic construct required to make them tick. But in 2019, sticking to tropes can hardly trigger an exciting watch and the supposed turn in the climax seems more ridiculous than rational to be palatable.
The film’s title possibly refers to the protagonist’s compromised mental state. Having endured this one, it’s a debilitating condition that you will share with him.
